I really like the idea of the story and I think it could be possible to get 2-3,000 words out of this if you decided to expand it. The only thing I have to say is that I think you could have a more powerful ending if you removed the last 7 words. You may even describe the "tree" setup a bit more. I know it's a parallel universe, but when we realize who's who in this story, we already know we're are not in the universe we expected.
