All that talk about lighting things on fire kinda reminded me of 'Love the way you Lie', but I'm thinking you're talking about a car, or a house. Or both...geez, I'm psyc.
This is actually a really good way of expressing a story, giving the reader enough leeway to make up their own side of the story, giving them the chance to use their imagination. I've seen conversations doing what the narrative should in some stories, but not like this and not to this scale. This is really testing a person's ability, and I think it's a really cool job done.

Is this about a draft dodger running away to Canada during the Vietnam War? That's what it sounds like to me but the story gives so few details I can't tell for sure...
