Beautiful. You've done a wonderful job creating an image and an emotion without needing to explain what's going on. All the reader needs to know about is what the narrator is feeling...I love the song being plinked out on the piano. Perhaps it was accidental, but the metaphor for life there, going through the motions without making music, is gorgeous. Great job.
