Chapter Three

Yet another boring school day, but this day wouldn't be so ordinary as previous ones. The tall, slender teacher stood at the front of the classroom; her eyes flickered over the roll sheet and she called out names in a strong, clear voice.

"Amano Kiskue."

"Hai, sensei!"

"Borakaru Akane."

"Here, Miho-sensei!"

"Biku Hikari."

"Hai!"

"Demono Ataki."

And so it continued until she reached the end of the roll-sheet, where three names had just been added the week before. She frowned, a furrow-line forming between her eyebrows. Shrugging, she finally called out: "Kami, Kaika!"

"Yo," the black-haired youth replied with a raised eyebrow.

She looked at him and frowned, but continued. "Kami, Kenji."

"Present, sensei."

And she finally called the last name. "Kami, YueRyu."

"I'm here, sensei. But please, call me Yue." A smile. "It's less of a mouthful for you to say. Most people _do_ call me Yue, anyway."

Miho-sensei blinked, then smiled at the polite young man. 'So many people have begun to lose their manners. It's nice to know that I have at least _two_ polite young adults in my class,' she thought, sparing a glance at Kenji and Yue Kami. Then she looked at the darker Kami brother and frowned. 'But I guess you just can't win them all...'

~KAIKA!~

Kaika winced, his head slightly ringing, from the _extremely_ loud shout that his older brother, Yue, had just mind-sent to him. ~Nani, Yue? And would you mind toning down the decibels just a bit? I'm surprised I didn't lose any brain cells from that shout of yours.~

~You'd have to first _have_ something in order to lose it,~ Kenji interjected smoothly, shooting a suave and charming grin at his second to the eldest brother.

Yue snorted in laughter and continued. ~Kaika, you know that we can't bring any attention to ourselves. We have a much bigger mission and you're going to screw it all up for us. So just tone it down, will you?~

Kaika frowned and the mind-message that he sent back was black and full of violence. One might say that it was...Death incarnate. A snarl. ~I can't tone down who I really am, and you _know_ that, Life. There are some things that, no matter _how_ hard you could try, they'll never be 'toned down.'~

Yue was about to reply with something snide of his own when Kenji, once again, interrupted. ~Enough. No more, out of both of you. Kaika, I know how hard it is for you, but just try to behave, alright? We can't afford to change schools again. It'd be our fifth school this month. _That_, if anything, will draw attention to us. And Yue---stop harping on him. You and I both know that he's been trying. And that's all we could ever ask for. So leave him alone.~

Life and Death paused in the middle of their silent bickering, turning their attention to their much younger brother. Though his mind-message had been intense, to all the rest of the world he looked like the epitome of the perfect high school student: He was sitting straight, neatly taking notes in a notebook, and listening to the sensei closely.

But, once again, the two knew that he _wasn't_ what he appeared to be. They saw that, though his silver hair obscured most of his face, he was still keeping an eye on them out of the corner of his eyes.

Life and Death exchanged several glances, then smiled at Oblivion, showing him that they would behave. He nodded slightly, then returned his gaze to his own work. Yue and Kaika shared yet another look and shivered. Kenji was most definitely _not_ what he appeared to be.

"So, Yue, you're the one that's closest to the Great One. What's it got to say about all of this? I mean, has it even really told you what we're going to have to face off against? I'm...tired...of seeing how so many people have died over the course of the last couple of months. I didn't really want to mention it to you, but they've been bad. _Really_ bad."

Yue shook his head sadly. "No, I haven't heard anything at all. All I know is that a lot of people have been dying lately---much more than usual. It made me become suspicious. And so I decided to ask you if you knew anything about all of this. If you had noticed anything different about the way people have been dying."

Kenji sighed and sat down underneath the tree they were near. As important as the talk was, they didn't have much time to talk. After all, break lasted only twenty minutes. He brought his knees up to his chest and rested his chin on them, a faraway look in his eyes. Briefly, he became Oblivion, his wings flickering, then disappearing, his silver hair growing longer momentarily.

The silver-haired youth shuddered and closed in eyes, trying to shut out of his memory what he had just seen. His powers were the closest to what he had just sensed. So it was only understandable that _he_ would be the only one to sense it.

"I know. I know what it is. I know what it is that we must fight," he whispered and slowly opened his eyes. The light was bright to his sensitive eyes and he squinted against it.

Yue and Kaika exchanged a look, but it was Kaika who finally spoke. "What do you mean, little brother? How would you know what it is that we must face?"

Kenji sighed and shook his head, clearing his face of any stary silver strands of hair. "I am Oblivion," he stated flatly. "I _am_ what so many people fear the most. My power _is_ Fear. Fear of what would happen if they fell into _my_ grasp. My powers are Nameless, but they are not Unnamed. Many do not realize it, but there _is_ a difference between the two. I can't explain it very well...but there _is_ a difference. What we are to fight is Unnamed, brothers. It's closest to my powers because my powers border the line between Nameless and Unnamed."

"What is it that we must fight?" Yue asked, crouching down to look his youngest brother in the eyes. "Kenji, please tell us what you know."

Kenji closed his eyes once again. "We spoke of it yesterday, but ony in jest. The...being...that we are to fight, my brothers, is none other than Chaos herself. She draws ever closer. She won't be fighting for a while yet, but that time period that she _does_ shows herself is fast approaching."

Yue sat down all the way and Kaika edged down, drawing closer to his little brother. If what Kenji had said was true, then they were in trouble. A _lot_ of trouble. And they didn't know what to do. Where was the guidance from the Great One when you needed it? Somewhere, far away, they could sense it watching. But it did nothing.

In the distance, the bell rang. None of the boys moved.
