I See You

He told me he would come
but I know he forgets promises
and yet, I believe what he says

You know I fear silence
more than lies

You've noticed me
try on a smile to fake bravery
but it crumbles before it can emerge
My mouth quivers
as I open my mouth to speak--
silence.

Thoughtfully,
You gaze at me, "wanna start over?"
You hold the sad poem I had written.

I fumble in the dark,
alone,
lost,
violated by too many people
like the bullies at school
who use words to hate

The sky turns dark
and it begins to rain
when I start to talk

"I'm afraid," my voice stays low
and it breaks evenly,
"that no will see me."

I shiver as your bed
gives me a cold embrace--
alone?
--as twilight ascends
inside the window of your room

Your hand traces my face
as if I were made of gold

You smile.
It fits your lips well,

"I see you."
