Images of someone laughing, crying, grinning and frowning flashed through his mind Images of someone he knew so well, yet will never have. Someone he had learnt to care for. Someone who knew nothing that was going in his mind. Someone whom he loved.

Throughout the years, he was always there to comfort her when she was feeling down or upset. He was always there to make her laugh. Yet, he could not be the one who brings laughter upon her eyes… Still, he wished he was. But he wasn’t.

He sighed.

}---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------{

The waves rose steadily. Inches by inches the waves moved up the beach where two young kids were building sandcastles.

“Haha! My sandcastle is so much better than yours! Yours just look like a pile of brown mud. Unlike mine.” The young girl of age 6 hung her nose in the air for a moment before continuing working on her sandcastle. Her sandcastle was nicely built with sea shells for windows and a huge leaf as the main door to the castle. A moat surrounded the castle. It would look real if I was made out of concrete instead.

The young boy of 7 kept quiet. He knew his sandcastle was terrible. What is the use of arguing then? His blue eyes surveyed the surroundings. There was no one else on the beach except him and that proud girl. Where was his brother when he needed him? Sighing, he got back to work.

This boy was not good at building sandcastles but there was nothing else to do. He had swum for the whole of yesterday. He picked sea shells for his mother the day before. His brother had disappeared somehow and he was all alone. The only thing he could do was build sandcastle but how was he to know that a haughty girl would be the only other soul around…

“Swish. Swish.”

The tide was getting higher. The water was by now touching the two kids’ sandcastles. The next “Swish” saw the destruction of the young girl’s sandcastle. The boy’s sandcastle still stood though. The tide dragged the remains of her sandcastle into the sea.

Lips quivered. Tears swelled. The dam broke with loud wailing. The young girl had burst into tears. Her features distorted. She screamed and she wailed. The young boy looked in dismay. Oh great, now she turns into a cry-baby after acting like a princess.

“IT ISN’T FAIR!!! MY CASTLE WAS SO NICE AND YOURS WAS SO UGLY!!! WHY WAS MINE DESTROYED BY THE TIDE WHILE YOURS WITHSTOOD THE TIDE???? WAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The girl just refused to shut up. She just continued screaming. The young boy picked up his pail and spade. He stood up and walked away. He could not be bothered with such a overbearing girl. The girl just wailed louder.

After walking a few steps forward, the young boy stopped and turned. The girl was looking at him and crying. Oh well, I don’t want people thinking I bullied her… …

He walked to his sandcastle. He looked at it and raising his right leg, he brought his right leg down onto the castle. Hard. The sand gave way. The castle looked as if it was attacked in a war. The next tide carried the “debris” into the sea. The boy stood at the edge of the water, watching his castle travel to the sea. He felt a tinge of sadness inside but he tried to ignore it.

Sob. Stop. Sob. Stop.

“Why did you do that for?”

The young boy did not reply. He walked off while the girl stood there looking at his retreating back in shock. She had stopped crying but now, she felt bad for acting so snobbish towards the boy. She hung her head.

----------------------------------------------------

“Here, this is for you. Take it, please… I… I just want to say sorry for the way I acted yesterday. I was being really mean…”

She handed him a clear green glass bottle filled with small sea shells. The young innocent green eyes stared at her unblinkingly for a moment. Then the eyes shifted its gaze at the bottle in his hands. It was decorated with paint and a ribbon was tied to the neck of the bottle. The girl had spent much effort in decorating the bottle and filling it up.

“Thanks. Don’t worry about yesterday. I’ve already forgotten about it.”

“Let’s be friends, okay? My name is Jade. I’m here for a holiday with my mother. I live in Breekwood. What’s your name?”

The boy looked at the girl smiling down at him carefully for the first time. She was pretty, even for her age. She had long and straight silky hair that was black in colour, with streaks of natural brown. Her eyes were a warm hazel brown, large, innocent and sparkling in the sunlight. She seemed sincere.

“Jaze.”

“That is a really nice name! Where do you live in?”

“Yea. I live in Greenwoody.”

“Hey! That’s just next to my town!”

Silence.

“Umm… Do you want to build sandcastles again? I could teach you to build one…”

“Okay.”

They built their sandcastle together, with the girl teaching the boy how to build a nice sandcastle. This time they built it further inland. The young girl did most of the talking while the boy listened. He was more of the quiet kind while the girl was the opposite. The girl talked about her family (“My parents are divorced. I live with her mother now.”), her school (“I love going to school! The teacher always let me do whatever I want and my friends would always play with me.”) and so on. The boy just nodded while he listened and sometimes he would add a few comments as she chattered on and on. The afternoon went by quickly.

The two kids played together for the next few days till it was time for them to leave. While their parents loaded their cars with their belongings, the two kids sat under a tree and talked. The boy was starting to open up but now it was time to part.

“It’s alright. We could always ask our parents to take us to that playground between Breekwood and Greenwoody and we can play together again. We could write to each other too. Wait here while I get the address from my mother.”

He waited. Tears threatened to spill. She came back.

“Here. Remember to write to me, ok? I shall reply every letter you send, I promise. I got to go now. My mum’s waiting. Goodbye.”

She stood up. The boy looked at her again. He felt the urge to give her a goodbye hug but he did not dare to. Before he knew it, she was already in her mother’s car, waving at him. He waved back.

The car drove off. The girl’s face grew smaller and smaller as the car moved away from him. A tear escaped his eyes. What are you doing, Jaze? Stopping acting like a baby! You are 7, not 3. He wiped off that tear and walked back to his parents. His brother began laughing at him, “Jaze is in love! Oh, he is in love!” The boy ignored his brother. He sat in the car and looked at the car window. He could see his own green eyes looking back at him in the reflection. How he wished it was a pair of warm brown eyes looking back instead. I’ll miss playing with her.

-----------------------------------------------------

How much have happened since the day we met.

Note: got a writer’s block when I got to this point (the ideas flow as I write you see, I don’t plan before hand) and I guessed a chapter should not be too long so I’m stopping here. Quality of this chap might not be good, but hey, I tried my best :)  So hope you’ll enjoy this chap… (sorry if the town names sound stupid…)

(about it being like Sweet Valley, I seriously had no intention of it being so. But all teenage fic are like sweet valley aren’t they? ‘cause they are all about teenage love… same topic, same output… I’m trying hard not to sound like SV though some traits can still be found in my fic, I think… just bear with me, ok? Thanks!)
