Note: For those of us who are completely chess illiterate, “j’adoube” is called out when a player wishes to adjust the piece without making a move. Basically, it means “I adjust”.
J’adoube
Through with running,
I, a mere black pawn, wait
as I move quickly but silently
Unnoticed through the ranks.
White Queen strikes down Black Bishop
while I lurk in the shadows.
Her dark ambitions, being set on the King,
ignore me as I prepare for the final battle.
I make my stand here.
I'm ready for you now.
You don't yet realize I've already won the war
so you still concentrate on a silly round.
J’adoube. J’adoube! Adjust as you
wish
For there is no way to prevent your fall.
Black Pawn, queened, captures White King.
Checkmate. And that is all.
Note: (Again) Sometimes, one of the hardest things to do is to make a stand, especially if you don’t think that you are not as good or smart as your opponent. After all, all it takes is one simple little pawn to win the game.
