Chapter Two

The Fight

“Hey, Sarah,” Daniel said at the bus stop the next day, “where do you live? You never told me…”

“I didn’t?” she asked, frowning slightly, “Oh, its one street up, and one building over to the right.”

He grinned. “Cool! Which stairwell and door number?”

What was he doing asking her this? ……….she really didn’t want to tell him so soon after meeting him… “First stairwell, find out the door number your self.”

“Why?” he asked, looking put out.

She glared at him. “Because.” Luckily, the bus arrived at that moment and she didn’t have to finish.

That day was exactly like yesterday, Daniel wanted to sit by Sarah, but instead she asked the teacher to place her in front.

“Sorry Daniel, but I really don’t talk in school, if that’s why you wanted to sit next to me.

“No!” he said, laughing slightly. “That wasn’t it! I just want to be close to you!”

She starred at him. “Why?”

“…Because I like you…”

Her eyes went really wide, her mouth dropped open slightly, and she continued to stare at him. She tried to ask the many questions swimming around her head. Finally she stuttered out, “How?”

He shook his head. “I don’t know…” Suddenly, he almost fell over from the impact of a gang of girls running down the hallway towards them.

“LEAVE HIM ALONE! HE’S JENNA’S BOYFIEND!” shouted a bunch of the girls at the same and repeating. Holy just starred at them as they started to pull Daniel toward a classroom.

“HEY! LEMME GO! GET OFF! HELP!!” Daniel yelled trying to get out of the girls’ hold. Unfortunately, all the teachers and attendants were in the teachers lounge on the other side of the school celebrating the principal’s birthday, so there was no one to help the poor, unfortunate young man, except Sarah.

“LET HIM GO!” she shouted, running at the girls and pulling them away. They, surprised at her speed, which was very fast, let go on him and scattered, running behind Jenna, who had just stepped out of the classroom. Sarah pushed Daniel behind her and glared at the taller girl.

Jenna looked at her distastefully. “Think you can beat me?” she sneered.

“Oh? You’re challenging me?” Sarah said, grinning wickedly.

Jenna raised an eyebrow, snickered and repeated, “Think you can beat me?”

“Yeah.” She looked her up and down and grinned. “You don’t look to fast.”

Jenna lost her smile and glared at the red head. “I bet I’m much more faster than you!” she shouted, running toward the shorter girl. Sarah was expecting that, and quickly grabbed Daniel, pushing him away from the attacking blonde. “Stay still, you little bitch!” Jenna shouted, turning around and swinging at Sarah again. She quickly ducked the punch and swung around on the ground with her legs, tripping Jenna.

CRASH! Jenna fell down. Hard. Sarah held out her hand for Jenna to take, but the prideful blonde slapped the hand away and tried to trip her. Sarah, ready for basically anything, jumped back and shook her head.

“I could’ve helped you, Jenna,” she said, turning away. She started to walk off, but Jenna’s voice stopped her.

“I’ll get you for this, Star!” Jenna shouted. Sarah looked at her over her shoulder, then shrugged and walked off.

She went up to the roof, although the teachers had told her not too. She looked at the far away mountains and sighed. She wanted to go back home, back to Japan, anywhere away from this awful city and school. A tear slipped down her cheek and, angry with herself, she quickly wiped it away.

“Sarah?” It was Daniel. She turned to him and snapped, “What?!”

He looked shocked at her tone. “Are you okay?”

“Does it look like I’m okay?!” she almost shouted, turning away. Tear slipped out of her eyes and she angrily wiped them away.

“What’s wrong?”

She glared at him. “Nothing!”

More forcefully, “What’s wrong?”

She glared at him, then burst into tears. “I wanna go back! I wanna go back home!” She threw herself into his chest and cried into his shirt.

Shocked, Daniel did the best thing he could do, which was holding her tight and doing his best to comfort her. The bell rang just as she calmed down.

“We’d better get to class,” she whispered, standing and making her way to the ladder. Too late. A teacher had already taken it down. They starred at the drop to the floor, which wasn’t really that far away. Her eyes roved around the ledge and her mind raced.

“I can get us down,” she said simply.

“How?” Daniel asked, clearly afraid of getting left on the roof all day.

She grinned and jumped down. She landed without a sound on the ground and went off to get the ladder. “That’s how,” she grinned.

Mouth agape, Daniel starred at her. “How do you do that?” he whispered, climbing down the ladder.

“Let’s not talk about that right now, lets get to class,” she said, putting the ladder away and rushing off toward class.
