***UNDER THE RUG***

-BY: LIRA-CHAN-

***Authors Note*** This was actually an assignment for school, originally, where we were supposed to either write the first half of a story, leading up to a scene in a picture, or the second half of the story, which should tell what happens after the scene. A little bit of background; the picture was taken from a collection, which was a set of pictures, each one a scene from a different story an author was writing and accompanied by a title and a quote. The author gave them to an editor, who loved the pictures so much that they just had to get the stories. However, the author had vanished. Using the title, quote and any inspiration from the picture, we were supposed to complete the assignment. Therefore, I don’t claim any rights to the original picture, the title, and the first line of this scene, which is the one from the collection. However, the scene itself is mine, and so is Edmund, the name I gave the man in the picture.

***In the Picture*** A small, frail-looking man with glasses holds a chair over his head while standing next to an end table with a lamp on it. The end table and lamp are in the process of being overturned, and there is a lump in the carpet beneath the table.

Two weeks passed, and it happened again. Edmund was sitting quietly in his living room after a had day of work when the lamplight from the fixture on the end table quivered and shook. Snapping out of his lethargy, Edmund stared on as the lamp itself shook violently, and the end table it rested on heaved once. His eyes traveled to the rug beneath the table, and they widened with shock. The creature- whatever it was- was back.

Suddenly enraged at the manifestation, Edmund leapt to his feet and snatched up the chair he had been sitting on in an unexpected demonstration of inhuman strength. Advancing on the thing beneath the carpet with his arms upraised, light from the affected lamp reflecting off of him glasses, Edmund let out a cry, before swinging the chair down to contact the floor. With a splintering of wood, the chair’s legs collapsed and the back broke off. However, the lump on the carpet had vanished.

Dusting himself off, Edmund went to leave the room, when he noticed a suspicious bulge in the carpet at the opposite side of the room. The thing had survived.

Pushed past the breaking point, Edmund finally ripped the carpet from the floor, to expose what lay beneath it. At first, he saw nothing. Then a furred creature seemed to melt into existence before him. It was feline, that was certain, but its ears were strangely elongated and its tail branched apart like two twin vipers. Fear was present in its large, dark, almond-shaped eyes, but there was also a strange intelligence and a weary defiance there.

It yowled once, but its cry was strangled as it collapsed into fearful shivers. Edmund’s rage left him, and he scooped up the quivering creature that was in reality no bigger than his hand. Sighing, he left the room, fetching a bowl of water for the creature. He supposed the mystery was solved, all that was left to be done was for him to clean up the mess of the living room and see to the creature’s addition to his household, which included only himself at the time. In reality he couldn’t bear to hurt the poor thing after seeing it.

***Authors Note*** That was definitely strange, our teacher didn’t stress the fact that this was a children’s book enough, or so I believe. Well, review if you like, lets see if anyone crazy enough to read this agrees with what my teacher says. The ending definitely sucked, but its all good!^^
