Last Leaf

                                    Last, lone soldier

Hanging on by one flimsy thread

I am not afraid to fall

                                    But sometimes I wonder

Do those fallen ones regret the life they’ve led?

Do they wish they could start again?

Or crave just a few more moments?

                                    I wonder

Hanging on by one thin tie

To the only life I’ve known

                                    I am the last:

Others are gone, accepting their fate

                                    I am not

                                    I linger still

                                    Wondering

                                    Some let go:

                                    They were ready to leave.

Others were torn, fruitlessly grasping backwards.

Still more surrendered and were blown away

by the rushing winds of time.

                                    I remain

Fiery color flows through my veins

Bright against a stark, gloomy backdrop

                                    My final beauty is timeless

                                    But time is fleeting

                                    One lone being

                                    Holding still

                                    But ready to let go

                                    I fall
