EXT. NADIR CITY - STREET - EARLY MORNING
SOUNDS of Nadir City continue from before. CAGE is as we left him, asleep in the doorway. As we close on him slowly, we hear:
He's coming for me...I...I can feel it. We're moving closer, we have been our whole lives...but now, he's almost here...I know...
Cage's eyes snap open at Sam's last words.
CAGE's POV: Two Zealots are approaching on the sidewalk.
Cage slowly begins to stand. The Zealots spot and recognize him, and they begin to run toward him, one Zealot drawing a gun. Cage tries to open the door (locked) and then kicks it in and hurries inside. A bullet hits the wall where Cage was a second before. Cage hurries through the building, pulling out his pistols and waking up several squatters. The Zealots enter the building.
Insert another cliche pedestrian chase scene (this time inside a dilapidated building), involving Cage and the Zealots trading pot shots on the run, and ending with Cage exiting the building into an alley (gun in hand), from which he heads toward the main street..
Cage is almost to the sidewalk when another Zealot steps out to block his way. Cage rams into the Zealot (knocking him over), and keeps going. GUNSHOT (O.C.) In a bloody spray, a bullet exits from the front of Cage's right leg, just above his knee. He falls to the ground, revealing the Zealot sprawled out on the sidewalk, a pistol in his hand. Lying on his side, Cage fires back at the Zealot, killing him. Cage pulls himself to his feet and, bleeding heavily, drags himself away. Around the corner, he stops and rips an arm off of his jacket and, using it as a tourniquet, ties the strip around his leg just above the wound. A Zealot hurries by, and Cage opens fire, shooting him in the back, before hurrying on.
We hear HEAVY BREATHING.
EXT. NADIR CITY - STREETS - MORNING
Cage is hiding in a wall recess. Four Zealots are coming his way. Holding his two guns, he bursts from his hiding place and, strafing towards an adjoining alley, opens fire. The Zealots return fire, but Cage manages to fatally wound one and escape without injury. One of the Zealots is about to chase after Cage , but the LEADER grabs his shoulder.
Let him go.
WOUNDED ZEALOT's POV: The three other Zealots stand over him.
WOUNDED ZEALOT's POV (as before) as LEADER shoots him once in the head.
CAGE is wounded and losing strength. There's only one place for him to go.
CUT TO BLACK.
INT. CAGE'S HOUSE - LATE MORNING
The broken front door swings inward, revealing Cage, limping and half-conscious from blood loss. He stumbles into the room and collapses against the wall opposite the door. The Zealots message (WE WILL FIND YOU) is visible on an adjacent wall. Breathing heavily, Cage checks his leg, re-tightening the tourniquet. He then unloads his handguns, checks his ammo, and reloads the weapons. SOUNDS of children at play begin, growing in volume toward mid-level. His guns readied and in hand, Cage begins to drift toward unconsciousness and, though he struggles, falls asleep, his head dropping in fatigue.
INT. SAM'S TENT - LATE NIGHT
SAM is lying face-up on top of his sleeping bag. SOUNDS of war (GUNSHOTS, artillery fire, SCREAMS, EXPLOSIONS, etc) are heard, and there are coinciding flashes of light from outside the tent. We slowly move to an AERIAL VIEW, which reveals Sam's whole body. He is wearing only his boxers, and blood is pooling around the flowing WOUND in his leg. Sam's unblinking eyes stare straight at the tent's roof. His voice is slightly hoarse and otherworldly as he whispers
It's not okay. It's not okay. It's not okay. It's not okay.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. SAM'S TENT - LATE NIGHT
SAM is lying on his back inside his sleeping bag. He jerks awake, uttering a short scream as he sits upright. The world is silent except for his heavy breathing. He throws off the sleeping bag and sees that his leg is normal. This calms him somewhat. A female silhouette appears, crouching outside his tent. Her voice is faintly familiar, that of the woman that Cage killed.
Sam, are you okay?
Sam is not alarmed by her presence, as he naturally assumes she is Helen or Kristin.
Yeah. I had a nightmare - I...I had a bad dream.
Sam looks at his leg, then replies truthfully
I don't know.
Are you sure you're all right?
Yeah. Thank you.
Woman stands and leaves, and Sam lies down again and closes his eyes just as a CREAK is heard.
SMASH CUT TO:
INT. CAGE'S HOUSE - LATE AFTERNOON
Cage's eyes snap open. We hear his HEART BEATING rapidly. Another CREAK. CAGE's arms snap straight out, guns ready, his eyes focus on the open doorway, seen from between his blurry guns. Silence, then ZEALOT #2 hurries across the open doorway. Cage takes two useless shots him. Another CREAK. Cage's hands are trembling. Leader laughs (O.C.), his black cloak barely visible along the right side of the doorway. The laugh is all it takes to make Cage snap. He empties both weapons at the walls, trying to shoot through the Zealots' cover. He is quickly out of ammo, but he continues to pull the triggers. The weapons are still
dead-firing as Leader and Zealot #2 are seen stepping into the room. Cage drops both empty handguns. The Zealot Leader steps forward.
CAGE has fallen back into shock/delusion; his eyes are bleary and unfocused, and he moves awkwardly as he pulls a lighter from his duster and, grinning ridiculously, brandishes the open flame as a weapon.
Come on. Come get me.
Leader moves in an arc around Cage, inspecting his prize.
So you're the Zealot killer?
Leader easily kicks the lighter from Cage's hand.
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. You don't even have the strength to stand up, do you? Do you?
On your knees, killer.
Zealot #2 pulls Cage forward, but the dying man falls on his face.
Zealot #2 pulls Cage to his knees. Leader circles and, standing behind Cage, places the gun to his head. Theatric HUM begins, steadily building in volume and intensity. We see only CAGE's eyes. A long second passes, then the HUM CRESCENDOS. GUNSHOT (O.C.).
SMASH CUT TO:
EXT. ELYSIUM - ETERNAL DAY
Cage's eyes, exactly as before, except now his irises are a light blue color. We slowly move away.
Cage is standing in Elysium. His scars are gone, his teeth are white, and he is clean. His hair is glossy and loosely styled. His filthy clothes are gone, replaced by khakis and a loose white dress shirt. A pleasant breeze blows across his face as he reaches around to feel the back of his head. His fingers search for the bullet hole, but find none. We move further away, to a view that encompasses more of Elysium. Sam, Kristin, and Ben are playing on the grass not far away. Cage watches them in silence for a moment, then moves toward them. When Cage is close, the children stop their play and wait for him to reach them.
Disbelief is evident on Cage's face as he looks around.
I'm Ben, and this is Sam and Kristin.
Cage looks down at SAM. We flash from Cage's eyes to Sam's. They are remarkable similar. Sam smiles, surprised but not scared to see Cage, who returns the smile.
What's your name?
Cage looks over the vast, open plain, then answers with a broad, free smile.
We move OUT and UPWARD to see Aaron, Sam, Kristin, and Ben standing together on in the green, endless fields of Elysium.
