The birds outside my window,

Dancing in the morning glory,

Fluttering from branch to branch,

Singing many a fabled story.

So oblivious to the hawks above,

The cats below,

Even to the stones

That the little boys throw.

They are fools,

Even to the most considerate eye.

Yet given this, I wonder

Why they are so much happier than I.
