Reflection of a Dream

Started 6/25/02

Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands. But like the seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your tides, and following them you will reach your destiny

– Carl Schurz

Prologue

Riley’s eyes that were a patchwork of blue hues studied him. Her dreams hadn’t let her be face to face with him this long before. She breathed in, her eyes inhaling what he really looked like. His voice usually bled a melody over the crystallized wind that seemed to trap her on the beach. Her dark hair floated around her, the strands falling to her midback whipping around with the breeze. A light gauzy dress almost translucent against her sugar pale skin covered her like a cocoon, but nothing made her feel more vulnerable than his eyes. They seemed to tell stories to her that were beyond anything she could comprehend. In fact, he seemed like he was the unattainable.

"Why are you here?" She questioned her eyes tracing over his tanned face.

An impish smile danced across his perfect lips as he reciprocated, "Who are you to ask such a question from me?"

This infuriated Riley. She didn’t like pondering questions that didn’t have any answers. It was pointless and a waste of time. Her blue eyes met head on with his hazy gray ones. It reminded her of a dense fog that would roll across a lake in the mountains on a cold morning. "Why me?" She questioned.

"Why anyone? Why NOT you?" He answered her, he had came closer to her. She felt strange being just arms reach from him. If she wanted she could have moved her hand and touched his arm, but fear paralyzed her. What was unknown to her, made her tremble with fright.

"I know you, don’t I?" Riley interrogated knowing that he would only answer her question with another question. She felt as though she was talking to the Cheshire cat in Alice in Wonderland, only in human form.

"Many people have seen me, but not many have known me," He stated plainly. His gray eyes were heavily lashed with black lashes making them look dramatic. "I know what I want, and I take it. It’s as simple as that."

"Not everything is simple," Riley frowned as he came closer brushing his hand up against her cheek.

"Oh but it is Riley. It is if I want it," He answered, his fingers falling through her raven locks as his gray eyes locked with hers. Riley’s heart pounded beneath the material of her dress and for a second, she thought that he was going to kiss her. "Sweet dreams," He stated, his body becoming dust in the span of one blink as a Better Than Ezra song came blaring on her radio, welcoming her to the first day of summer.
