Authors Note: this is a story idea that I got last night. I’ve been stuck on my other stories so I figured I would work on this one until I know how to continue the others.
Chapter One
The Heartbreaker
"Dane, you have a scheduled appointment with Johnny Rickelson for ‘Midnight Hour’," Shauna jabbered on looking at her planner making sure that she hadn’t missed one pencil smear that was possibly a very important social gathering and such.
"Midnight Hour," Dane repeated buttoning the lacy wristband of his shirt. Tonight was a huge day in the socialite community of Virginia Beach. Louella Bennett was throwing a huge masquerade type ball that was filled with rich loons trying to outdo each other. Anyone who was anyone would be there and he was being urged to go by his own parents who seemed president of this little secret society.
The Roberts were a family that you just didn’t mess with. Their power and money was no secret on the beachfront, and their family was always invited for the well to do’s. Dane had only been talked into going to a couple by his parents because he didn’t see any reason to why he should flaunt himself like some showpiece for the women. Shauna often remarked that Dane was like wine. He intoxicated women to silliness.
"Yes…it’s that late night talk show. You know the one where he has girls competing to see how many bananas they can eat. Rather vulgar I tell you," Shauna commented her thirty something nose going right into the air making Dane chuckle.
"Shauna, you are a character dear," Dane remarked putting on his dark blue suede jacket that matched his eyes to a tee.
"I’m glad someone notices around here," She muttered chewing on the end of her pencil, still looking at the datebook. Ever since Dane was small, Shauna had always had a datebook glued in her hand. Shauna had been the Robert’s secretary for sometime now, and Dane just accepted her like she was another family member. Maybe a long lost cousin or something.
"I notice more than you think," Dane replied taking one last look in the mirror before heading to his closet, retrieving a package, and handing it to her.
"What’s this?" Shauna asked looking at the package a little spellbound.
"It’s a package. Don’t tell me you’ve never had a present," Dane joshed, his dark blue eyes dancing at his secretary’s expression.
"No…yes…I mean," Shauna stated fumbling for the words like a bumbling idiot. "I’ve had a present before, but what is this for?" She asked holding the package like it was a ticking time bomb ready to go off.
"What? Can’t I be nice once in awhile?" Dane replied with an expression that showed he was hurt by the fact that she thought he was leading her on. Shauna studied Dane a few minutes before looking at the package. "Go on…" Dane encouraged, "Open it."
Shauna’s brown eyes narrowed a little more before she cautiously slipped her red manicured fingernails under the bow and lifted it off. Just as gently, she moved the lid and her lips breathed in a gasp. "Dane!" She replied looking down in the package.
Dane wore a Cheshire grin that seemed to go on for miles. "So you like it?" He replied remembering how long it had taken him to pick out the perfect present for her.
"Like it?!" She questioned her brown eyes still wide as she looked down at the two beautiful beach towels and two tickets to Hawaii.
"I know that Bill doesn’t really like bugs and all, but I figured you guys might need a vacation some time, you know?" He smiled running his hands through his dark black hair.
"Dane…this is too much!" She replied trying to thrust the package back at him.
"No!" Dane replied pushing it away like it was a disease. "You deserve it Shauna. If you come to work those days I swear that I’ll rob you blind."
Shauna’s doe-like brown eyes iced over with fresh tears. "Dane…I don’t know how women have just let you go. You’re truly a prize," She sniffled tucking a piece of short brown hair behind her ears and dabbing at her tears.
"Well…you know me. I’m like a horse that isn’t going to be tied down," Dane retorted. "I need a special kind of rider to break me…"
Shauna looked at him and even though her eyes were still moist from all the gratitude she had for him, she still had time to tell it like it was, "But of course you don’t mind letting them try do you?"
Dane let his head roll back and roared with laughter. Even though he was only twenty-three, he already had a reputation of a heartbreaker. "No…No I don’t, Shauna…" He grinned as she laid the box down with careful precision. "Now, onto a different subject, how do I look?"
Shauna stepped up and fixed his velvety jacket, making sure the flaps were straight and uncreased, "You look like you have just stepped out of some Renaissance-aged romance novel. Now go and don’t you dare break some girl’s heart tonight…."
