Tina Dalan slowly made her way down the long hallway into the office on the right. She paused, and looked up at the white board that was centered opposite the office. There was her name, written with a black marker, and beside it, was written her problem. Physical self-harm was written beside her name in bold, and as she turned around, she noticed her father coming slowly up the hall. She shifted her shoulder bag slightly as her father came up behind her and hugged her close against him. She could smell his aftershave, and a faint hint of old spice. He let go of her, and she walked up to the front desk.

"Can I help you? Oh wait, you must be Tina Dalan." The woman was saying a lot of different things to Tina's father, but Tina wasn't paying any attention. She was looking down the hallway to a group of girls who were staring back at her.

"Well Tina, my name is Cherl." Cherl held out her hand towards Tina, and Tina turned around to shake her hand. Cherl and Tina's father, Christopher, started walking down the hall.

" Come along Tina." Christoper said. Tina walked slowly behind them, looking at all the other girls who were peering out of their doorways to get a good look at her. Cherl turned around a corner, and led Tina and Christopher into a small room. Another girl was sitting at a desk, and she turned around to look at Tina.

" Nicole, this is Tina Dalan. Tina, this is Nicole Hudson, your new room mate. Nicole, I expect you to show Tina how everything works, and where everything is. Well, I'll just leave you girls to get aquainted with each other."

"Bye honey." Said Christopher. Cherl walked out of the room and started down the hall. With one more look at Tina, Christopher left the room to follow her.

"So what are you in for? I mean, I saw your name on the white board, but how did you get found out?" Tina reached down into her pocket to feel for the piece of glass that was hidden deep in the bottom. It brought her some comfort to know that even though her father had taken away every sharp object he could find, he hadn't found the piece of glass. She pulled her hand out of her pocket, and turned to look at Nicole.

"I was suppose to get an DPT shot." said Tina, remembering what had happened that day.

"You mean a Deptheria, Tetnus, and Polio shot? I had to get one of those last year."

"Yeah. Anyway, when the nurse went to pull up my sleeve, I started panickng, because I didn't want her to see what was under my long sleeves. She thought I was just afraid of needles...But when she finally got my sleeve up, she looked like she had just witnessed a suicide. They called my parents, took away everything that I owned that was sharp, and then sent me here, to "get better"."

"Damn girl, thats harsh. Did they take away everything? I know when they hauled me here, they took all but one little thing, a bracelet I had made with a piece of glass as a charm. They couldn't really take it because I said I wouldn't go without it." Said Nicole. Tina quickly looked around, and then shut the door. She didn't want anyone knowing that she had snuck a piece of glass into a hospital.

"I have this left." Tina pulled out her piece of glass to show to Nicole, and then she rolled up her right sleeve. "They took away everything else, and put lotion on my skin to smooth out the scars, but it won't help much. I went too deep to be able to get those scars to fade." Tina rolled back down her sleeve and showed Nicole the piece of glass.

"I guess we cutters all have an interesting story to tell. But since I don't want to listen to Cherl bitch all through dinner, I better go show you where everything is." Nicole stood up out of her chair and headed towards the door. Tina followed her, and was glad to know, that for once in her life, she finally had a friend.
