Okay, this is my newest story ^_^ I don’t know where it’s going but it may be a romance! *gasp* If you know me, you know how shocking that is. So, I put it under supernatural/romance even though it has drama, fantasy, action, and I hope humor as well as a few other things ^_^ Well, hope ya like it! Sorry for the some-what corny title ^_^
Oh, and I agree, so I moved it around a little… and the family will play a more important role soon, except the father, who will come in later… hehe… While I was at it, I also fixed some of my stupid mistakes ^_^ Forgive me that there are no indents, for is mean to me…
A Ghost’s Story
Episode One - Afterlife
It’s different then you think… dying that is. I can’t remember much of my life before I ‘passed on’ as it were… I only have flashes and certain feelings. I know I’ve been dead for a while, but I don’t remember a lot of it for some reason…”
I don’t know why I don’t remember… All I know is I died about a hundred years ago… but how… Anyway, I know that most people believe in an afterlife of some sort…
I can’t tell you if there’s an afterlife beyond this one. I have known other ghosts, for lack of a better term, who have passed on to wherever… I am not one of them for some reason.
Being a ghost isn’t all bad... It's not like people think, were you look like when you died. In fact, you can change you clothes and even your hair length and style. You can also move objects with your mind, which is useful…
One thing that is true is that normal people aren’t even aware of us ghosts. Of course, not all people are normal…
A person in touch with the spirit world might see our reflection in the mirror or our image out of the corner of their eye. We usually appear as a gray blur though… We can even be visible to ‘normal’ people if we concentrate hard enough, but again we just appear as a blur…
Anyway, I’ve babbled enough. Where am I you might wonder? I am writing in a diary in the attic of an old house. Yes, though I am dead, I can still write. Remember how I said I can move objects?
It always freaks people out to see a light coming from an abandoned house… that’s always fun. But I should get to why I’m writing all this down…
I will tell the story in the third person to make it easier on all of us, should any one find this, since I can write better that way. You may not believe that a ghost is writing this, but it doesn’t matter as long as you read…
It started when a family actually moved into this house. It had been about ten years since I awakened, as I like to call it, and no one had lived there in that time. Though I was not confined to this house, I often stayed here alone…
The family consisted of the two parents, a teen daughter, and a younger brother who I could tell was a brat right away. Anyway, it all started on that day, when I knew she was different…
Oh, I almost forgot one thing before I start… my name is Luna. I can’t remember my true, full name, but I decided to go with that one. I felt a connection to it somehow. Anyway, let me tell you about the family that occupied my house.
The mother of the family looked younger then she was, and kept herself trim and fit. She had an athletic body, but still very feminine. She usually wore jeans, sometimes cutoff shorts. She liked to wear baggy shirts ranging from pink to blue, or any color that suited her mood.
She had short, slightly wavy, brown hair tied back in a ponytail. She had sparkling bright green eyes and was probably close to six feet. From what I know of her, she is a caring, open-minded person who deeply cares about her family. Her name? It was Sakura... Their family name was Luminaire by the way.
Ugh… Then there’s the brat of the family, Okkuu. He was barely over five feet, short for his age. He was on the chubby side, with straight, short, dirty blonde hair, and beady dark brown eyes. He usually wore top-of-the-line jeans that were too expensive for a kid like him. He was their son though, so I guess they had to take him with when they moved…
The father, Vincent, was someone I could never really get. Sometimes he seemed to care so much, and other times he was so insensitive. He was almost always wearing a business suit.
When I first saw him, he was wearing a brown one with a striped tie, and was holding a matching brief case. He was just over six feet, by a couple of inches. He had slicked back, short black hair and dark brown eyes.
I had an odd feeling about her from the start. Her name was Yuki, which meant snow I believe. She was kind of cold… She had surprisingly white hair, and bright, ice blue eyes. At the moment her hair was styled in a long, high ponytail, which stopped at about her waist. She was surprisingly tall for her age, definitely taller then her brother, being a few inches from six feet...
I could relate most to her clothing; since appearance definitely didn’t matter to me anymore, (though I think it never did even when I was alive…) she liked to wear black sweat suits. In other words, plain black sweatpants and usually long-sleeved sweater.
Oh, I realize I never described myself. I had dark purple hair, with two long bangs ‘framing’ my face. I had a ponytail similar to Yuki’s, but shorter. I was surprised at the different colors of all of their hair…
But I had dark violet eyes, which went along with my hair. I was also wearing a sweat suit, only mine was gray. I was probably the only one who could see me in color anyway.
Oh, almost forgot some other ‘members’ of the family. The first is Rover, the dog; he was named by Okkuu, and kind of looked like him. He was a plump, spoiled beagle, though he had a better personality then his master. The other was Suchi the cat; she was completely black, except for a dark gray area on her stomach, and mask-like, gray areas on her face.
They play a part, because, as you may know, animals are more sensitive to the supernatural. I know they both could see me as clearly as I could see myself. The dog usually made little signs that I was there, although I do play catch with him sometimes… Suchi, however, seemed to take a liking to me. She would sometimes follow me around, and I’d run away so she’d run after. I bet it looked funny to see a cat suddenly dart across the house for no reason…
Got a little off track, but I like to be thorough. But Yuki was curious about the attic and basement, so I knew we’d meet soon… I just didn’t know it wouldn’t be one-sided…
“Well, what do you think about your new home?” Sakura asked..
“It sucks.” Okkuu answered.
Vincent was the next to walk in. “Be nice. This place may be a fix-me-up, but we did get a good price.”
“What do you think, dear?” Sakura asked. A young girl walked in, aged around sixteen.
“Kind of dark… I like it.” Yuki answered.
“Quiet you brat…” She growled. He stuck his tongue out at her.
“Why don’t we take a tour…” Sakura said before it could escalate any further. Vincent went to the kitchen while Sakura lead them upstairs. The house was huge, with three floors and a large, walk-in attic.
They started one the third floor, which had four bed rooms, and a bathroom, plus the attic stairs.
“What’s up there?” Yuki immediately asked upon seeing the stairs to the attic.
“Oh, that’s just the attic. There’s nothing up there but an old desk…”
“I want my room here.” Yuki pointed to the door near the attic.
“Sure, it even has a balcony…” Yuki ignored her mother and walked in, closing the door behind her. Sakura sighed.
“What if I want that room?” Okkuu whined.
“Oh be quiet…” His mother grumbled. He stared at her as he was lead downstairs. The second floor was identical to the third, and Okkuu took the room directly under his sister’s.
The first floor only had one bedroom which was the biggest and thus automatically the parent’s. There was a large kitchen, a dining room, a living room, and then a large family room.
The last floor of the house, the basement, was almost completely empty. There was a little area with the washer and dryer, and even the water heater, but the rest was empty and dark…
Yuki sighed. She hated moving. Sure she didn’t really have any friends at her old place, but she hated to be displaced like this. She sighed and sat on her bed. It was a week since they moved in, but she never got around to unpacking.
Since I’m not doing anything… She thought to herself. “Why don’t I explore this place?” She finished aloud. No one had ventured into the attic or basement, and since every one was sleeping, she decided to grab a flashlight and explore.
Yuki wandered through the dark halls, deciding to make for the basement first. Even her parents didn’t like going down there, since there was only one light near the stairs. The basement was so large, that most was covered in the darkness. Okkuu was completely afraid to go down.
Yuki suddenly stopped as she reached the basement door. It was in a little breezeway near the back door. She thought she felt a chill, but decided it was just a gust of wind through the door. It was actually Luna silently following her…
Yuki opened the door, and shined the light down. She could see the faint outline of the washer/dryer combo. She was glade that at least they had nice appliances.
She sighed and headed down, closing the door behind her. She didn’t want anyone to know she was snooping. She started shining the light around the room, starting with the wash area. There were a few boxes, but once you got out of the little area, there was only hard floor. She shrugged and walked into the darkness.
This would make a great place to relax… Yuki thought to herself. No one would even know you were down here… She shined her light around the walls in the furthest corner. She paused for a moment, and moved the light back. She thought she saw some movement.
She turned full circle, stopping on the corner. There was a girl standing there, staring blankly at her. She had pale skin, which the light almost seemed to shine through… Her hair was a dull purple, almost looking like it should be darker then it appeared. She was wearing a plain gray outfit.
Yuki blinked a few times. The girl was staring at her with pale violet eyes, which, like her hair, seemed too light. She was staring at her almost as though she wasn’t really there.
“Who are you?” Yuki whispered. The girl blinked, realizing that she was in the light and that Yuki had seen her. She just stood staring some more, almost surprised that she had been spoken to.
“Why are you in my basement?” Yuki demanded, louder then before.
“I used to live here… once.” The girl said quietly.
“That gives you no right to enter other people’s houses.
“I like it down here… it’s so quiet… hard to find quiet no-a-days…”
“…Who are you?” Yuki demanded.
“I… am Luna.” She wasn’t used to talking anymore, especially to the living.
“How did you get in?”
“I… used to live here… a long time ago.”
“I heard you before, but how did you get in?”
“I…” She lowered her head for a moment. “I walked in…” Yuki glared at Luna, wondering what she meant by that. She thought she heard a noise behind her, and spun around. There was nothing there.
“What do you mean, you walked in?” She asked as she turned back towards Luna. “Huh?” She was no longer there. “Luna?” Yuki searched the basement for a few moments, and figured she had somehow run out.
Yuki was a little shaken by how silent the girl had moved. She didn’t ever get frightened easily, but the thought of someone being able to get in and out without a trace bothered her.
She sighed and decided to try the attic. She silently worked her way back up to her room, and stood outside the attic door. The door creaked as she slowly opened it. Lucky for her, the floors were thick and almost sound proof, and no one else was on that floor anyway.
She climbed a couple of the stairs and then closed the door, causing it to creak again. She shook her head, and aimed her light up the stairs as she started her climb.
She was surprised when she reached the top. It was much like the basement; large, windowless, and dark. She did manage to find a switch, and turned it on. Unlike the basement, this area had a series of light bulbs going across the ceiling. She noticed an old, large wooden desk at the far end.
She walked over, turning off her light to save power. She made it to the desk and saw a small lamp setting on it. There were three drawers on both sides, and a wooden chair for a seat. There was also a small, leather-covered book with a lock on it. Next to it was a small container of ink and an old style feather pen.
“That’s so cool…” She mumbled as she looked at the pen. She opened the drawers, looking for a key, or other goodies, but they were all empty. That’s when something caught her attention. There was a hidden middle drawer. She was about to open it, but she noticed something else.
The floor almost had a layer of dust, except where she had walked. The desk seemed dust free, as though it had been used recently. She shook her head, and opened the drawer. She found another book, similar to the first, but it seemed more recent and had no lock.
She went to open it when she suddenly heard a voice. “I lost the key for that one long ago… and besides, it’s not polite to read other people’s journals…” Yuki quickly turned. Luna was only a few feet away from her, staring with those mysterious eyes again.
“It’s not polite to snoop around in other people’s houses in the dead of night either.” She raised an eyebrow as Luna flinched at the word ‘dead’.
“Please leave this place alone…” Luna said her tone still soft, yet somehow threatening.
“It’s my house, and I can do what I want!”
“You don’t understand… This is my quiet place… where I rest… I don’t want it disturbed…”
“Why shouldn’t I? I live here. I don’t know where you came from, but if you don’t get out soon, I’ll call the police…” She stopped as she glanced down at the floor. The dust around Luna was completely undisturbed, while the dust around Yuki had obviously been disturbed.
“Who are you?” Yuki asked again.
“No one…leave my journals alone…please…” There was something in her sorrowful voice that made Yuki shiver; she was never one to get cold either. She blinked, and for the second she opened her eyes, Luna was gone.
“How…” Yuki stared for a moment, and then put the journal back. She shut the door and silently walked towards the door, flicked on her light while turning the rest off. She walked back down the steps, and headed back to her room…
“Sakura, who owned this house last?” Yuki asked. She always called her parents by their names.
“I’m not sure… It’s a pretty old house and no one’s lived her in a long time… Why do you ask?”
“Just curious…”
“You know, school starts tomorrow, so you have to go to bed early…” Her mother mentioned. Her father had left long ago, and her brother was up in his room, doing whatever he does.
“I know…” She decided not to tell her about Luna for now. But if she saw her again… She sighed and finished her breakfast. “I’m going to go wash up…” Her mother nodded, and she headed for her own bathroom on her floor.
Each one of the bathrooms was large, with their own, large tub. They each had their own, large mirror, including a full length one on the back of the door.
The one thing she did enjoy was her baths. She set up a series of candles, pulling the blinds and shades over the small window. She filled the large, circular tub with warm water and stepped in, slumping into the warm water.
She sighed. One of the best parts of moving was she got her own bathroom, so she could take her time in quiet. Also, no one barge in on her; not like they could with the door locked.
After a while, she got out and dried off. She put on another sweat suit, and started brushing her hair. She didn’t consider herself that ‘girly’, but she did take care of her hair. She hated dresses and could barely tolerate skirts, and never wore make-up.
She sighed, adjusting her hair back into the ponytail, staring blankly at the mirror. She suddenly saw someone standing behind her. She turned, expecting to see Luna standing there again, but found no one. When she looked back in the mirror, the image was gone.
“There’s something odd about her…” She sighed, and went to organize her room…
She didn’t know what time she woke up that night. But she had this odd feeling someone was watching her. Yuki turned on the light and looked around, but saw nothing. That’s when she heard a strange noise.
It was a soft sound, almost impossible to tell what it was. But when Yuki got up and left her room, she could here it from behind the attic door; singing. She quickly grabbed her light and headed back up, flinching as the door creaked and the singing stopped.
She quickly headed up the stairs, not bothering with the lights. There was, in fact, already a light on. Luna sat at her desk, with the lamp light casting a dim light in the corner. But that’s not what made Yuki drop her light.
The light seemed to be going through Luna, shining right through her and making her look transparent. The desk was even partially visible through her back.
Yuki cautiously walked over to her, and stopped when she was but a foot away. “What… are you?”
“Do you really want to know, Yuki? You may not like the answer… but I feel a connection to you… I was so surprised when you could see me without aid… and hear me…”
“What are you talking about?”
“Most people can only hear whispers of me, or see shadows of my existence. They may catch a glimpse of me in the mirror, or from the corner of their eyes. But you can see me… like I’m normal…”
“Normal? Who are you? What’s going on?”
“Yuki… you see, I’m a ghost. I died over a hundred years ago…”
