Author’s Notes: This poem is a slightly mythological one, about being in love with an immortal. Sort of like Eros and Psyche from Greek mythology. The title is borrowed from Bette Green’s book Morning Is a Long Time Coming.
Forever Is a Long Time Coming
Forever is a long time coming
Ageless skin and beautiful hands
Weave together a pattern of each dawn
Of each morning that greets the mountaintops
Century after century
Moment after poignant moment
An elixir of life running through your veins
A sweet ambrosia fills your breath
Young and yet impossibly old
Childlike innocence mixed with painful wisdom
A blend of all that is
And all that will come to be
Forever is a long time coming
A distant shadow that holds me in a vice
Reminding me of my simple mortality
I will live
I will laugh
And then I will die in your arms
What cruel twist of irony had softened my heart?
Bent my strong armour so that I am defenseless
Naked against the slow drip of the hourglass
Time will claim me
While you, my immortal love
Will live forever
To the very day the world ends
And then I shall rejoice
Because forever has come
