Signs of Courage

I wrote this for a competition, I just found out recently it won the first level of judge and has gone on to the next level to compete. It was a real surprise considering I was going against the best as one of the younger competitors. The only thing was the poem had to have something to do with the signs of courage. This is what I believe!

Courage is a curious word,

Everyone thinks it means being able to face your fears,

But to me it is so much more.

There are many obvious sings of courage,

Standing up to the school bullies,

The strength to stand for what you believe,

Stand against your fears,

Not running away.

One that is not so obvious is the strength to be different.

It is hard to be yourself,

It is hard not to conform to society,

The less obvious are some of the strongest signs,

More around us but we don't see it,

Courage is the strength to trust someone,

The letting down of personal walls to trust,

It was courage that had man walking on the moon,

It was the courage to contradict that led to our society,

It led to advances in science and medicine,

Courage is the strength all around you.

It is to see the hungry, sick and dying around,

To realize they were victims, and to help them.

To face the truth of the harsh reality we live in.

Maybe it is the strength to comfort a dying relative,

To be with them until they are gone.

It is in a mother, who looks strong for her dying child,

Even when all she wants to do is break down and cry.

It is a friend comforting you,

Maybe even when they are suffering from there own troubles.

Courage is when someone lends you a hand,

After you've fallen so far.

Someone giving you a shoulder when tears wet your face.

Living is courage,

Especially when every thing seems so bad.

It is there inside when the world seems to have turned on you.

It will always be there for you.

Maybe you'll never have to sacrifice you life for your friends,

Or live a martyr's life for something you believe in,

But everyone has courage.

We all saw the buildings crash to the ground from an attack,

We all saw the dead and wounded,

But people had the courage to save their friends,

The courage to dig, knowing what they might find,

But living with the hope all would be all right,

I know I saw a nation come together,

They had the courage to support each other.

They all showed their sign of courage.

It is with you at all times.

Courage is the strength in the hard times,

Courage will humble you in the good times.

It lies waiting in all,

Yours is there inside,

When will you show your true colors?

When will you show your sign?

When will you be the one that is strong?

What will you use your courage for?
