Alexis: Heart and Blood
Prologue
A/N: Okay I know the first 2 paragraphs are a little wordy! But bear with me here and you’ll get through them!
Dissonance reigned. Military forces have erupted all over the globe. They have employed whatever means available – chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. Millions of people in the first world countries have become displaced while in the third and second world countries, people starved. Civil agencies have been superseded; the Martial Law has been reinstated, perhaps permanently. Despite the government’s attempts to suppress insurrection, many terrorist organizations are gaining control over the underworld and the black market. Some terrorist groups have gone as far as openly launching attacks on government organizations. The morale of the people is collapsing. They are becoming disillusioned.
Meanwhile, medical research has exponentially proliferated. Indeed, “necessity is the mother of invention.” This research, taking place within the military’s research agencies or “privately funded” corporations, has reached a remarkable level. The blueprint of the human genome has been mapped. We can now reverse any biochemical processes that bring about human diseases. Junk DNA can be eliminated. Recombinant DNA has created a new strain of humans – transgenics. Recent research has made a new discovery – the use of computerized mechanisms, injected into a transgenic’s biological system, has effectively transformed these human subspecies, rendering them almost invincible.

“Doctor? We’re getting ready to insert the microchip tracking devices into her blood stream. We’ve engineered the subject’s memories; they’re in place. All systems are operational.”
Having stared out the glass windows for a prolonged second, Doctor Alexandria turned around. He scoured the face of the subject, who was lying, unconscious, on the operating table.
“Doctor Alexandria?”
“Alright. Commence the process.”

I woke. Rather, I opened my eyes. I couldn’t remember falling asleep, or dreaming, for that matter. I was lying on a soft bed in a room surrounded by pastel walls. There was a smattering of furniture and some photos. It occurred to me that this was my room and that I’ve lived in this house with Alice, for two years now. I met Alice when we were both studying in the university; we both majored in medicine. It was rare to receive such an extended education nowadays but our parents were both fairly well off. I’m still enrolled in the university, studying for my M.D. After I finish my on-site practice, I’ll be well on my way there, after I finish my on-site practice – which reminded me, I have to be at BioLex at nine thirty sharp. I scrambled out of my bed. My hands flew to my head, clutching at it. I hadn’t expected a head rush. I didn’t remember ever getting one before…Maybe I was coming down with something, but then again, I didn’t ever remember coming down with anything either.
I climbed down the stairs into the kitchen. Alice was scrambling eggs. “Good morning.”
Alice jumped. “Oh! You started me there, Alexis! How are you this morning? Would you like some breakfast?”
Poor Alice, she was probably stressed out from work. She was recently promoted to the head nurse at Wood’s. I grinned at her, “I’m fine, Alice. I’ll have some your eggs and some coffee, if you please.”
“Sure thing. But you had better hurry up or you’ll miss your train, sweet heart.”
“Shoot.” I grimaced as I stuff the eggs into my mouth and downed the coffee. “I’m gonna run, Alice, I’ll see you later?”
“Yeah, have a good day.”

Alice waited a few minutes after Alexis had gone out the door before she picked up the phone and said in to it, “Vital signs of subject A appear normal and healthy. The subject has left the premises and is heading to the station.”
