(Important to know about the Larath elves: they build
their houses in the branches of trees.
A forest in the springtime. Methrir has his arm up against one
of the trees and is resting his head on it. He is an elf in his twenties,
though his face does not appear very elven. The right half of his
face is covered by his long hair; the visible eye (his left) does not appear
to focus on anything. The reason for this is that he is blind, though
only recently so; he has never had use of his left eye and, about two weeks
back, lost the use of his right.
Behind him stands his friend, Amdris. He, too, is an elf, though
he has more of a traditional elven appearance than does Methrir.
Amdris is a few paces behind Methrir and slightly to Methrir’s current
left.
When both elves speak, they have the heavily slurred accents of the
Larath elves.)
Amdris: You are being unreasonable, Methrir.
Methrir: (Still with his head against the tree) Unreasonable?
It is unreasonable to want to live my own life?
Amdris: No, that is not unreasonable and I am not trying to stop you
from doing so. But you must accept the fact that you cannot see--
Methrir: I do!
Amdris: (Speaking over him) --And it limits you! Without sight,
you cannot hunt! Without sight, you cannot climb safely in the trees!
(As he speaks, his voice rises.) Without sight, you cannot read!
Without sight, you cannot travel any great distance! (He abruptly
realizes that he is shouting and brings his voice down.) Methrir,
you cannot live alone.
Methrir: (Whirls around angrily but the effect is spoiled by the fact
that he is not actually facing Amdris, but has accidentally turned too
far and is facing a spot about two spans left of his friend.) And
why not?
Amdris: Methrir...
Methrir: (Hotly) What?
Amdris: I’m over here. To your left.
Methrir: (slowly turns so he is facing more or less in the direction
of Amdris.) Forgive me.
Amdris: There is no offense to forgive. But you have just proved
my point very nicely. If you cannot even tell where I stand, how
can you possibly expect to climb safely down from your house? You
could kill yourself!
Methrir: I will build myself a house on the ground.
Amdris: What?
Methrir: That way I will not accidently fall out of the tree as you
envision me doing.
Amdris: You can’t build a house!
Methrir: (Sighs) Well, by myself, no. Others may help me...
Amdris: So you will accept the aid of others for this but you will
not let someone take you into their house.
Methrir: No.
Amdris: And why not?
Methrir: Have I not already explained this to you? I will not
depend on someone else to live! What don’t you understand about that?
Amdris: I understand what you want, but surely you can see--
Methrir: (Drily) I can’t.
Amdris: (Rolls his eyes) You know what I mean. It can’t work.
What will you do for food?
Methrir: (Slightly unsure) I... I could forage.
Amdris: (Skeptically) Without the use of your eyes?
Methrir: I could feel my way, see with my hands. I know the smells
of different fruits and mushrooms... I... I would be able to...
(To himself, very softly) Swift Maithr, I hope I can.
Amdris: (Heard what Methrir said and finally understands that his friend
is not just being stubborn merely for stubbornness’ sake, but is really
quite frightened and confused since his loss of sight and is trying to
keep what freedom he can.) Oh, Methrir... (he steps forward
and lays a hand on Methrir’s shoulder.) Well, I had been prepared
to invite you to live in my house, but I take it you will not accept.
(Methrir shakes his head negatively.) Then I do not know what to
say. You are sure of__
Methrir: (Suddenly angry) Yes! And perhaps if everyone would
stop saying I can’t do it, I could! (He whirls around and slams directly
into the tree behind him. Clapping a hand to his face, he staggers
back a pace with a curse, right into Amdris. Amdris catches him by
the shoulders and speaks into his ear.)
Amdris: Calm down, Methrir; I did not mean to offend you. Are
you all right?
Methrir: As well as can be expected.
Amdris: Good. Well, if your mind is made up, I see no point in
trying to persuade you further. Remember, if you ever change your
decision, my house is open to you. (He turns and walks off SR, calling
back over his shoulder.) The hall is to your left.
Methrir: (Snorts) I think I would have found that out eventually.
(Turns away from Amdris and exits SL, groping ahead of him with his left
hand.)
