The frosted land glistened in the sunlight, with flakes falling from above. It was heaven, or so Rae had always thought. Her camera flashed wildly outside. Photography had always been one of her favorite hobbies and she didn’t bothering hiding it. Carrying her camera with her and waiting for the perfect Kodak moment – Rae was always ready.

The air was freezing, she guessed a few below zero, and it blew through he thin, fine hair. She attempted to put it up in a bun when she woke up, but like any other day – her hair refused to cooperate. It fell sloppily on her shoulder, the barrette tangled within.

Another breeze blew by and Rae decided she had better go inside. Turning to head back in, she spotted it. A scream began building up in the back of her throat, her heart pounded in her ribcage. She took a deep breath, raised the camera in front of her, and clicked. The eagle, who had been perched on her porch ever so gracefully, flown away at the flash.

Never once had Rae seen an eagle, and now – she had a picture of it. Somehow, her mind went numb a few second after the sighting, perhaps taking in what she had seen. Though it was the peak hours of the night and the wind chill was well below zero now, Rae smiled. She figured if she cried for joy, the tears would freeze on her face.

She didn’t see him coming. She didn’t hear the car roll up behind her. She didn’t hear his door open. When she heard his footsteps…it was all too late. Her scream echoed off the houses, but was soon muffled but he strong hand. She kicked, bit, spit, yelled, and thrashed around. It was useless. Faster than you could blink, she found herself, hands, mouth, and feet duct-taped, in the back of a car.

Now, she had no fear of her tears freezing to her cheeks, for the salty, liquid poured down her eyes.
