It was a hot summer day in Wolf Point, Montana. Ruby Smith rolled down the window of her father's black limousine and let her hand trail outside in the hot wind. Across the bench seat, her sister Jade stirred and awoke after her brief nap.
"Ooh, close the window; you're only making it hotter in here," she moaned, fanning herself with her perfectly manicured hand.
Ruby rolled her eyes and said nothing. She depressed the black button and the window went right back up. She saw the reflection of herself in the window. Pretty and fifteen, with brown hair, blue eyes, and dimples, Ruby and her fraternal twin Jade were on their way to a dig site. Already Ruby could see paleontologists scattered across the sharp rocks and cliffs, searching for fossils. Ruby looked over at Jade and saw that her blonde haired, brown-eyed sister had fallen asleep again. Ruby sighed and continued looking out the window.
There was a mechanical hum just then and Ruby saw the dividing window between the first and second sections of the limo being lowered and her father appeared on the other side.
"We're almost there," he said, "and I should only be a few moments. Wait here in the limo for me."
"Where are we going after this?" Ruby asked, lowering her dark sunglasses over her tired eyes.
"I thought maybe we'd get something to eat before heading home. Luckily it's Friday so you girls don't have school tomorrow." Mr. Smith looked out the window as the limo came to a halt. "I'll be back soon Ruby."
Mr. Smith got out of the limo and walked away along the dusty trail.
Ruby turned to Jade, who was still asleep. If only people really knew us, she thought, then they'd see that it's not necessarily so great to be us.
Most people though Ruby and Jade had a very easy life living as they did. Their parents were divorced and their mother had moved to Costa Rica, where she worked as an archaeologist. The girls lived most of the time with their father in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Smith owned an oil drilling company and naturally made a lot of money off of it. They lived in an enormous loft in Dallas and on weekends and summers went to their ranch just outside of San Antonio. But what most people didn't know was the private lives of Ruby and Jade Smith.
