I Remember
by Hyel
I remember
Bits of wood flew from my hands
my knife danced
as I sat in the corner of the room
My worn and old hands I saw
as I looked at my work
the white meat of wood surfacing beneath my hands
The fire warmed my bones
sweet warm fire
like a whisper of the peace beyond
The girl patched clothes
Humming a familiar tune
I loved her
The folk sat the night away
within the country kitchen
I carved wood in front of the fire
and loved them.
