Author’s Note: I’d forgotten about this poem. It sure sounds like I was annoyed when I wrote it. Beats me what I wrote it about now, though.

********

Don’t.

I see the words on your lips

Don’t utter them.

I don’t need to hear the tales

Of how the world failed you

Anymore.

Can’t you see I’m trying to get by?

Hanging on to a distant thread

Of evanescent hope

Dangling precariously

Behind someone else’s eyes?

I don’t need to see the despair behind yours.

The world’s unfair

And that’s okay.

Society’s paved the road to hell

With its greed

And misplaced intentions

And that’s okay.

The people have lost the sparkle in their eyes

Their thirst for adaptation

And situation

And that’s okay.

Can’t you feel it?

I can make it all okay to live in this world

If I live in mine.

If I narrow my eyes

And refuse to see.

Because we can’t care about everything at once-

We’ll go mad.

And I’ve been there.

It’s not a pleasant place.

I have one thing to hang onto

One desperate handhold.

And the words echo throughout the chasm-

Not to care.

So much easier to go on

When it’s not your problem.

So understand

That it isn’t.

Find your thread-

That’s your problem.

And for crying out loud

Move on.

It gets annoying.
