He sits engulfed in his armchair

A gnarled old man wizened like a tree

Silver moonbeams dance in his snow-white hair

And a leather bound book lies open on his knee

She sits at his feet by the fireplace

Watching the flames flicker and twirl

With an insatiable hunger in her shining face

For the enchanting tales that unfurl

A handsome Prince rescues his fair bride from a tower

The Dragon rumbles like an earthquake on his fiery bed

An evil sorcerer unleashes his terrible power

And un-earthly animals fill you with dread

Heroic characters fill me with strength

A story lets me escape from my fears

When the book ends I feel whole at length

After the subsiding of those bittersweet tears
