This is going to be a series of essays completely for the purpose of free speech. I believe that in today's society, there is too much conglomeration and not enough individuality. In a world where unique once reigned, there is now "being with the crowd". I believe that if this trend towards assimilation continues, we will all become one person, one mind, one body, with words such as "new", "original", and "innovative" will be irradiated from the genome of this One Person.
Creativity is slowly being erased. Such things as Music, Art, and Drama are morphing into ways of getting cash at an alarmingly rapid rate. People with no talent, or sense of tune, are dominating our Musical World today. Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake are the ones who get all the credit, the most money, the most fans. Their songwriters, God bless them, get almost no credit at all. Doesn't that say something about our world today?
Now, I know that there ARE some creative souls out there that DO get all the credit and DO make all the money. But just HOW do they get this money? They cater to their fans wants and needs. They write and sing what other people want. Some do write and sing what they feel expresses them the best, but in the end it boils down to one fact: If the fans don't like it, it doesn't sell.
And this is only the tip of the iceberg (pardon the cliché). There are synthetic replacements for art everywhere today. Drama used to be a way of showing your feelings through another character. Today it's just a way of showing your pretty face. If you HAVE that face, you will act. Though there are people who are trying to deny this fact and save the Silver Screen from becoming a fashion runway, they are not succeeding. There may be some people who can act, but the people who can't are rapidly outnumbering them.
I've painted a rather depressing picture. I've made it sound like we have no hope. I've probably made you want to smack me with my depressing facts and point of view. But I'll be damned if you can't find at least the littlest bit of truth in my words. But the world CAN be saved from becoming a cesspool of sameness. I beg you, to speak out, to BE the odd person out, to DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. I IMPLORE you to EXPRESS yourself, to do the RIGHT THING even if you know others will jeer you for it. I ask you, simply, to be yourself To be unique. To be your own soul. To be your own mind. To be your own sense of direction. I ask you to be YOURS.
