Summary: Darie always wanted to know why death happens. Why is there a cycle of life? And what happens when she meets someone who can defy death…and more?

Prologue

Have you ever wanted to see someone die? I’m pretty sure the answer is no. Well, let me throw another one at you: have you ever wanted to see someone defy death? Now that’s a question you have to think about.

Well, no one’s really ever thought about it before. It’s kind of been in the back of their heads, and whenever the question comes up, it’s pushed away. If you ask someone, "What would happen if you defied death?" Or even something else. Gravity, for example. Either the person would stare at you like you were a maniac, or they would reply with an answer that you both know they didn’t think about. Like, "That would be freaky," or "How do you think up these things?!"

It’s really quite unfortunate how your friends do that to you. They don’t think about what you say. All they do is reply stupidly, automatically. This is what they teach people in these schools—to become robots, following trends and fads and doing nothing important. Asking nothing important.

Philosophy means nothing to these people. Oh, I suppose that’s not being fair. I suppose some people ask Important Questions, and they mean to do something good with their lives when they grow up…but you have to admit, in general, people aren’t like that. Nobody—except maybe a few adults. And even that’s rare!

Anyway, I guess you want to know how I started thinking like this. I’m ashamed to say that before this whole adventure, I was like everybody else. I pushed away ‘strangers’ and ‘smart alecks’, and thought nothing more of it. Well, Hope made me change that. Definitely. And it all started on a normal-enough Monday afternoon…
