Week 1 - March 18, 2003
If this gets popular, or I at least get some response, I may do this every week.
Who is right and who is wrong? In a world where what is correct in one nation is a critical offense in another, the question is hard to answer. I won’t even try. Instead, I’ll question it further.
What is the U.S. policy on dictators? Many agree that we fight for freedom, and wipe out dictatorship. In that case, why did we allow Saddam to rise in the first place? Why do we still ignore Castro, and why, when he began his rule, did we support him?
President Bush stated that we would declare war on terrorism. Great. But how do we define it? To us, a terrorist is an al-Qaeda member. Does anyone remember Tim McVeigh, American-born and bred? Or the Unabomber? Aren’t they terrorists?
Bush stated we would turn against any country that harbors terrorists. Well, I guess we turn our backs on ourselves. We still harbor racist groups. We automatically turned our backs to Americans of Middle-Eastern origin or descent, preferring to believe that they were the ones against us.
Every nation has its terrorists. The suicide bombers that are rising out of the Palestinian and Israeli conflict could be called terrorists. But we don’t carry guns, looking to kill them. Hell, we’re terrorists right now, as far as some are concerned.
I could also rant about our foreign policy, which allows us to tell another country what to do. But no one else can order the good ol’ US around. Guess they’re wrong, and we’re right.
I could rant and rave some more, but I’ll quit for now. And don’t get me wrong – I love my country. Or at least, I love what we are supposed to be, and not what we actually are.
