The Path of Life

I was walking along the path of life when a cliff loomed into view

Near the jagged edge was my friend.

Toward the precipice of the cliff he scurried.

Against my will, my feet stayed in place, reluctant to move.

During those precious moments, he walked over the cliff.

From someplace deep inside me, a heartrending cry broke out. Soon my shirt was sodden with tears.

After I looked out over the edge of the cliff, I winced at the horrible sight; his mauled body lay there, crumpled and deformed.

With my help, he might have lived, but

Without aid he died.

Throughout the days after I had that vision, I pondered what could have happened had I helped him.

Up until that day, I considered my life simple, but now I know I was wrong.
