The hawk and the mouse were the best of friends,
Better friends you never did see
However, there was one fatal day
That made the hawk and enemy
This is a tale of the two on that day
With one on and one under the tree.
The mouse called the hawk Mr. Billy Caw,
The hawk dubbed him Brian Squeak
But in a pinch, they were Bill and Bry
Though rarely did they speak.
On this day, though, the hawk was troubled,
And decided to open his beak.
"I'm hungry," said the bird to the beast,
Said the mouse to the bird, "I too."
"The trouble is," said the large young bird,
"That my main prey is you!"
"Ah-ha!" Laughed the mouse at the bird
Not aware that it was true.
"I kid you not," said the hawk to the mouse,
"I do not tell a lie."
The poor little mouse was quaking so
That he soon began to cry:
"Dear friend, no, don't eat me though!
"I do not wish to die!"
"I have no choice," said Bill to Bry,
"There's no other beast in sight!"
"Do have a heart and spare me, Bill,
"As I think you might!"
Said the bird: "My stomach growls so
"And the skin on my bones is tight."
At that, the bird leapt up so high,
Astounding was his flight
The mouse could barely see his friend,
For so great was his hight.
And he was frozen, blinded there
The sun gave such a light.
Then suddenly, the hawk dove down
From his perch in the sky
Such power, then, was in his claws,
For he had been so high.
This is the end of the tale and, too,
The friendship of Bill and Bry.
Author's note: I have been told by both a parent and a teacher that this is not a very likeable poem. I actually wrote it a year ago, in seventh grade, and just thought of it today. Digging through my notebooks, I finally came across it, and... well, here it is. I'm sorry if you find it "horrific." (As it has been dubbed by my best of friends, Bethany. *grin*)
