The Unwanted Angel…

Ria flew with Thomas to Heaven, but as they arrived Stemasta was waiting for them.  As they neared him, Ria saw that Stemasta had a sorrowful look in his eyes and she dreaded what he may say.  Releasing Tom’s hand she gestured for him to remain at the edge of Heaven while she listened to what Stemasta was to tell her.

Thomas stood in complete awe at the imaginable beauty of his surroundings; the golden light that shamed a summers day, the softness of the clouds as they passed about him and the soothing sound of the singing angels.  Only once had Tom felt so at ease and relaxed by his surroundings; that first time her held Ria in his arms and hours had passed like seconds, that time when he hadn’t been sure if he stood in his apartment or if he had indeed come here to Heaven itself.  Thomas continued to smile and enjoy the beauty around him as Ria walked on.

“What is it?” Ria asked anxiously of her friend.

Stemasta’s eyes were now full of sadness for the news he must give to his friend.

“Ria, your tears are what has made this mortal into one of us.  When your tears mixed with his blood they entered his soul and as his soul was released from his body, it still contained your tears.  His soul changed and joined itself to you, to your own soul.”

“You mean we’re literally soul mates?”

“It’s not that easy I’m afraid.  The Archangels have decreed that only the purest and most saintly of mortal’s can, through a lifetime of selfless acts and kind deeds, achieve the status of Angel.  As what you’ve done goes directly against that, they’re returning Thomas to Earth, as a mortal…”

Ria was shocked and stunned by this.  To have been so close to being with Thomas only to be denied at the last possible moment.  But there was still hope… at least now she could continue to visit Thomas and they could continue their love for as long as she could shed her tears.  And perhaps one day, her wings would be clipped and she could live with Thomas as a mortal, as she had planned.  But Ria’s plan was not to be.

“That’s not all” continued Stemasta “The Archangels have learned of your desire to clip your wings for this man and so they have decreed that you too shall return with him to live as his mortal wife.”

The sparkle in Ria’s eye was now brighter than ever as her face lit up with happiness.  She smiled back to Thomas and ran towards him.  Wrapping her arms around him once more she closed her eyes.

When Ria opened her eyes again she was once more laying on top of a battered and bloody Thomas, her tears rolling down her face to fall upon his shirt and into his wounds.  Shock gripped Ria as she realised what may happen.  She spun round looking for Azrael, but he was nowhere to be seen.  Then Ria realised that her wings were gone, she was no longer an angel!  Even if Azrael was standing right in front of her she would not be able to see him!  Ria knelt back over Thomas and held him tightly and it was then that she realised he was breathing normally.  Looking down at his wounds once more she was thrilled to see that the blood on his back was gone, even his shirt was clean.  In amazement Ria leaned back as Thomas rolled onto his back and sat up with a tired and puzzled look on his face.  “Ria?!  What happened?” he asked “Where are your wings?!”

Ria laughed out loud and dived on top of Thomas rolling him back over.

The police arrived moments later and a flashlight shone into the alley revealed a young couple laying in each others arms.

“What’s going on here?!  We had a report of an attack in progress!” cried the lead officer.

“Yeah quick officer arrest her, she’s attacking me with hugs!”

The lead officer was not amused as his colleague let out a small chuckle.

“Wasting police time is a serious offence” he began.

“I’m sorry Officer” Tom managed between Ria’s kisses.

Behind them the police car radio chattered and the officer shook his head and said “Don’t do that again and stay out of trouble!”  Moments later the police were rushing away from the scene as quickly as they had arrived.

Tom was now up on his feet and pulling Ria up behind him.  “What are we doing in this alley?” he asked in bewilderment, for Thomas, now a mortal once more had no memory of his brief trip to the Kingdom of Heaven, the past few moments seeming nothing more than a dream that he could not remember.

Ria, although in the body of a mortal now, had still retained her angelic soul, her being and so answered her love “It’s a long story.  Make a good bedtime story for our kids though…” and with a half smile she wrapped an arm around Tom’s waist.

Tom smiled at Ria’s answer and draped an arm over her wingless shoulders as they walked out of the alleyway and into their new life together.

The End
