Don’t Mess With Scar-face(a.k.a. DMS)

By: Olivia Black

It all started when J-J or Jason and Jeremy dared me to spend the night in Wolf Forest. Now that doesn’t seem that bad, but I was nine and it was a full moon. As a kid I had always been told to never go into Wolf Forest on a full moon because the wolves go crazy. I had always thought that was a story to scare kids away from the forest but that night I found out the truth; the wolves weren’t your ordinary wolves. That night one bitch-wolf attacked me, she scratched me across the face, and I remember screaming like a schoolgirl. But something happened, the wolf just ran away and I have never seen another wolf in that forest since. It was three weeks before I was out of bed. My parents seemed almost scared of me and my classmates’ faces would go pale when I entered any room. Doing well in school was never a problem; my teachers would just give me a passing grade and leave it at that. I have three jagged thin red scars running diagonally down the right side of my face.

My name is Parker or Scar-Face to the two headed idiot we call J-J. I have no friends, I am alone. It was the night before Halloween when I first saw her. I was walking through the forest on my way home when I saw a girl about my age sitting at the base of a tree with blood streaming from three long thin gashes on her left for-arm much like the ones on my face. She looked up at me but said nothing, I kept on walking. The next day we had a new student in the class, her name was Mran, she was from Canada. She wore a costume like everyone else but her’s was different. She wore a long black cloak with the hood over her head, a pair of wolf ears, a Björk T-shirt and a bandage on her left for-arm. It was her, the girl from the forest. She of course sat next to me since it was the only empty desk in the class and no one else wanted to sit next to me. The first thing she said to me was “Hey Wolf Man” from then on she always called me wolf man.

“What kind of freak doesn’t wear a costume on Halloween?” she asked.

The entire class stopped what they were doing and watched. The fact that she was actually talking to me was as much of a surprise to me as it was to them. It was like an unwritten rule; don’t talk to Parker, he’s evil. And calling me a freak was invading on Jason and Jeremy’s turf. I looked her in the face and said

“I don’t know what kind of freak likes Björk?”

even though I actually liked Björk. She just laughed

“At least I know I’m a freak”

and after that she started to follow me around, always laughing. I think everyone thought she was just some freak from Canada but that all changed about a month after she first came.

We were just starting archery and Mran surprisingly volunteered to demonstrate. The gym teacher was saying stuff like “look at her eyes” or “look at her arms as she draws the string back”. That day she hit a bull’s eye but no one cared, they were all staring at her left for-arm. For the first time they saw the same thing in her as they did when they look at me; a monster. She threw her bow down, looked me straight in the eye and bowed then she stormed out of class. I gave the class a hard look muttering “bastards” as I left to go find her. I found her leaning on someone’s locker tears pouring down her face I stood in front of her and was about to say something when she cried “why me?” throwing her arms around my neck, crying openly now. I had been asking my self the same question, why did the wolf attack me? Why is everyone so scared of me? Why did the wolf run away? What does every one know that I don’t? The questions could go on forever and I honestly didn’t have any of the answers. She cried for a very long time, the people who saw us were very weirded out. Half way through the next period she finally stopped she whispered “sorry” in my ear and the started back to class. Her face was still pale when she got back to class and everyone seemed taken aback by her presence. After that she never fought with the geography teacher, asked stupid questions in math class to waist time or showed off in class, she stopped following me around too. I didn’t see much of her for the next two weeks.

I was walking through the forest on my way home when I found Mran asleep in a tree, her bare feet hanging down. I started to tickle them as I called up

“I kind of miss you following me around”.

She started to laugh kicking her feet

“Stop that!”

It was good to hear her laughing again. She sat up and asked

“Are there others like us?”

I had never thought about that, I never even bothered to see if there were others. I shrugged and said

“Why do you ask?”

“My parents got a call from the school that didn’t do me any favors and they kicked me out. And now I need a place to stay”

“Have you been living here for that past two weeks?”

“No no my ‘rents kicked me out yesterday”

“Well you can live with me if you want”

She jumped out of the tree and hugged me then said

“Lead the way!” and that was that.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of food this girl could eat. It was just plate after plate after plate, it seemed like she never stopped eating. After a while I made her pay for her own food cause I was running out of money for other things and I didn’t plan on going with out food. Living with her wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be but sometimes she was just weird. I don’t know if it was the fact that she grew up in Montreal and was used to doing crazy things just for the moment. Sometimes she would come home completely wasted and she’d say to me

“If you want to have a good time… take a drunk Canadian for a night on the town” and then burst out laughing hysterically until she would pass out. Or she would sit in her room burning incense and meditating, and if you bug her she just stares at you until you go away. She was into all that supernatural stuff like Wicca and sadism. So every once in a while she get out her tarot cards and give me a reading and some of the cards that came up were just plain spooky. But she always knew just how to make you feel better with her knowing smile and her little stories about all the messed friends she has. Sometimes I think that she should have stayed in Canada where she was wanted. Sometimes she’d just sink into the deepest despair and it’s a wonder she survives these times. She would stop eating, talking, sleeping, doing anything for that matter. It’s very disturbing to see someone sink that deep into themselves for weeks at a time. When this happens I spent as much time as possible out of the house though now that I think about it I’m not quite sure if that helped her any.

You know how New Year’s Eve is usually celebrated right, you go to a part and at mid night you kiss the one you’re in love with. Well the school always has a dance on New Year’s Eve. I had not planned on going but Mran bugged me for weeks on end.

“Come on you have to come! Please?”

“I don’t know”

“Oh come on it’ll be fun!”

“But no one will want us there”

“Who cares? They’ve never wanted us anywhere and its not like they can stop us from coming, you’re wolf man or scar face remember? They’re not going to do anything”

“Fine, fine, fine. I’ll go just stop bugging me!!!”

“Yay! But what am I going to where?”

It took Mran about two hours to get dressed, but finally decided on a long medieval black peasant dress, with about six of these long strings of little black beads on each wrist that dangled close to the for, replacing her usual metal spikes. Her hair was down with a few braids here and there with small eagle feathers on the ends. She looked beautiful.

Anyways, I wasn’t really looking forward to going. People don’t really welcome freaks to they’re social events but then again nobody could stop us. I think the ones who were the most surprised to see us were J-J, we walked in as they were saying

“Have you ever wondered what wolves do on New Years Eve?”

“Yeah I heard they hunt each other down and mate.”

“So if I were you I wouldn’t go near scar face’s house, who knows what him and that girl could be doing.”

Mran smirked and said

“Don’t you know its bad to tell little gullible children lies?”

Everyone turned around and saw Mran and I standing there hand in hand smiling the biggest smiles we had smiled in a very long time. I honestly thing that everyone thought we were going to attack them by the looks on their faces.

“You might want to find out if someone is going to be around when you’re badmouthing them.”

“W-we didn’t think you’d come.”

“Yeah, we thought you’d be off some were having puppies.”

“It doesn’t take an idiot to figure out that humans can’t have puppies – but you wouldn’t know that since your mother was a bitch and you’re both bastards.”

Scarlet and Marlene were furious but not with Mran, J-J got the slapping of a lifetime. Anyway we danced got bored at the lack of excitement and left. We were walking through the forest when Mran’s watch started beeping

“Its twelve o’clock”

“Yeah, so?”

She just looked at me

“Do you mean to tell me that you dragged me to that stupid dance just so you can get a kiss at mid night!”

“Maybe…”

“You could’ve just asked”

And then I kissed her. I’ll leave the rest of the details up to you.

Later that night or morning if you will J-J came to call. I was half asleep on the sofa when I heard a crash and then the smoke alarm went off. I grabbed my cell and I got out of the house to find J-J standing there watching our house burn, I figured Mran would come out any second so I called 9-1-1 and waited for the firemen to come and put out the fire. It was about five minutes later when I realized Mran wasn’t any were in sight. So I went up to Jeremy and asked

“Have you seen Mran? I can’t find her.”

“Oh crap she must still be inside… this is all my fault I should never have let Jason talk me into doing this. I’ll go get her. Were would she be?”

“In her room… the one with the big window on the second floor”

“Thanks”

By the time the firemen had arrived the second story was about to collapse and still Jeremy had not come back with Mran. By then I was getting pretty frantic, I was scared I was going to lose Mran to the fire and I almost did. When the firemen finally found them Mran was unconscious and Jeremy was almost dead. Things got much worse though. On the way to the hospital Jeremy died. Mran came around after about two days of me being worried sick. She can say the stupidest things sometimes, the first thing she said to me when she came around was

“Hey wolf man did you forget how to make coffee? You look like crap”

Well she put new light on coffee for me… no coffee – look like crap, coffee – look a little better.

“Well it’s kinda hard to make a cup of coffee when your coffee machine is a hunk of melted plastic and glass.”

“What?! Hey! We’re not at home! What the hell!”

“Calm down! J-J burnt down our house on New Years Eve and when you didn’t come out Jeremy went in to get you and something fell on him and he died on the way to the hospital which is where we are now.”

“Oooooooh okay! So where are we gonna live now? And does everyone blame me for Jeremy dieing?” I don’t think she really realized what I was saying… I don’t blame her, it took me a while for the events of new year’s eve to really sink in.

“Um… I think my mom might send enough money to get a nice apartment down town. And yes they blame you for him dieing. They think you didn’t get out of the house on purpose. But lets not worry about that. So, how are you?”

“I’m fine”

“Really? For some reason I don’t believe you.”

“I like hospital pillows!”

“I’m sure the doctor will let you keep one… which reminds me, I better go tell the nurse you’ve come around.”

“Okay cutie, have fun!”
