The EMT's were careful to take the plug out of the socket before pulling Oscar out of the bathtub. By the time they had arrived he was already dead. The television had generated more than enough of an electrical charge to stop his heart. Oscar's mother could be heard in the background, crying hysterically. She was the one to find Oscar, while the impulses were still running through his body.

The ride to the morgue was one the EMT's were used to. But that still doesn't make it any easier. The two began talking.

"This is the sixth one this week."

"Yup."

"None of them left a note either."

"Nope."

"Must be hard on the families."

"Yeah."

"Wonder what the reason was for this one?"

"Is there ever a good enough reason?"

"I'm sure there is to them."

"Guess so, but it does no good to think about it now."

"You're right. Still, I wonder what drove this kid to it."

Oscar was just an average boy. Grades were average. Average parents. Everything about him was simply average. He was however one of the kindest and most hospitable people anyone had come to know. Still no person thought much about Oscar, not even himself.

This all changed one day when he met Yvette. At first they started just as acquaintances. This grew into a friendship. Their friendship grew and Yvette had become Oscar's greatest friend. It was only a matter of time. They then began to see each other for much more.

Oscar thought there must be someone smiling down on him to be gifted like that. Gifted with the love of the one he himself loves. True love felt by and for both parties. To them, they had what so many people spend years to find. A love that would never die and never fade. They were the happiest in the universe.

The years passed. Four years to be exact. Now Oscar and Yvette were Juniors in high school. Their love for each other had only grown. They had shared much over those four years. They even lost their virginity to each other and went through many hardships together. No matter what had happened though, their love held strong.

One day however, Oscar had been on his way to the office during class when he saw Yvette. He began to walk closer but as more came into view he saw somebody else. It was Ulysses. At first Oscar thought nothing of it and kept heading toward them. He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw her throw her arms around Ulysses and began kissing him. He could only stand and stare in disbelief.

When they finally separated, Ulysses looked over at Oscar.

"What the hell are you gocking at?"

Yvette looked over at Oscar. He stared into her eyes and she could not keep eye contact. Oscar passed by her and headed for his car. He started the engine and just drove away. In the mirror he could see her yelling for him. Then Ulysses came up and they began to argue. Oscar took his eyes off of them and just drove.

It was getting dark when Oscar got home. When he opened the door to his room, Yvette was sitting there. He threw his coat on his bed and sat down. He knew this would come, though he wasn't sure if he wanted it to. Yvette moved from the couch to his bed and sat next to him.

"Look, I'm sorry.." She began but was cut off.

"Don't tell me you're sorry."

"But I am."

"I don't want to hear it."

"But."

"No!"

After a very long silence.

"How long?" Oscar finally asked.

"Does it really matter?"

"Maybe it does to me."

"About three months ago."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me Yvette."

Oscar looked at Yvette and their eyes met. His eyes were reddened and full of tears.

"Alright. The truth is. well I just don't love you anymore. I can't explain it really. It's just that I don't have the same feelings for you anymore. I didn't want to tell you because I thought it may change."

"Well thank you, this was so much better."

"Oscar."

"Please leave."

After another long silence, Yvette got up and walked out the door. Oscar wiped his eyes and lay down. Despite what she had done to him, he could not hate her. He tried but couldn't. He still loved her more than anything else. He lay across the bed and fell asleep.

Despite everything Oscar and Yvette remained friends. Over time, he even began to become friends with Ulysses. Neither one of them knew how Oscar still felt for Yvette. Another year passed and it was not long before the three would graduate. Still Oscar hung onto a small hope that Yvette would rediscover her feelings for him.

A week before graduation, Oscar, Yvette, and Ulysses began to discuss their plans for after graduation. Oscar abstained because he didn't really think about it. He wasn't thinking of anything but Yvette. Then he had heard something. Marriage. He looked up while they were still discussing it. They were already planning on marriage. That was the moment. The moment he finally realized, he had lost her.

The morning of graduation Oscar had woke up earlier than usual. His mother couldn't understand why he had plugged a TV in the bathroom. She didn't know why he was running a bath rather than a shower. She had no clue. How could she know?

Oscar stepped into the warm bath and turned on the TV. He brought it closer to the edge of the tub. To Oscar, his was a pain too great to endure. There is no greater suffering than that which comes with loving one who could never return that love. It carries an agony too great to bear.

Oscar began to think about what love was. To him love was eternal. Love was something that could not fade or falter. It would live forever. Then true love does not exist. Everything fades and falters. So what is love? Just a dream your parents fill your head with at an early age. A dream that they want you to believe in because they know the truth. Love really is just a dream. And dreams are crutches used by people too weak to live in reality. There is no love.

A quick shove. The lights began to flicker throughout the house. Finally Oscar's mother had a realization. She ran upstairs, opened the bathroom door, and discovered Oscar's twitching body. She ran to her cell phone and dialed 911. But it was all too late.
