Hole
By Tione
There was a hole there. Gaping and wide and screaming and ready to swallow me up.
No, that’s foolish. That hole couldn’t swallow me up. Where had my brain gone?
Oh, I made a joke.
The hole blew your mind. You just stood there a moment, before collapsing. I hardly noticed because I was staring at the hole.
Then something started to come out of the hole. I didn’t wait to find out what.
“Come, my friend,” I shouted to you. But you didn’t move. “Let’s go!” But still no movement. So I left. I half expected the hole to follow me. But it only followed me in my dreams…
The next morning the doorbell rang.
“Hello,” I greeted as the door swung open. It was a burly man accompanied by a taller, skinny one. The stark blue uniforms and guns fastened to their belts gave them away as police officers. The skinny one started the litany.
“…You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you…”
“But what did I do?” I asked, alarmed to feel the cool metal of the handcuffs snapping around my wrist.
“Son, you left the gun at the scene of the crime. There were fingerprints on it,” the burly one answered.
