An Illegal War?
There are many arguments that can be made in opposition to the war in Iraq. It could be called illegitimate, one could say that it is a failure of democracy and/or diplomacy, some people have even gone as far as to label it is a sin. A good case (though not one I agree with) could be built in support of almost all of these opinions (except maybe calling it a ‘sin’, because that was said by the pope and he has about as much moral authority as my dog). One argument that cannot be made, and would not be made by anyone who understands and supports our Constitution, is that this war is illegal.
The President of the United States was given the power by both Republicans and Democrats in Congress to wage war against “terrorists and those who harbor them”. Whether or not the good men and women in Congress regret giving President Bush that power is irrelevant.
You can support the war without supporting the President (disclaimer: I support the war and the President). I don’t think people understand that. What most of the anti-war protesters really are is anti-Bush. They do not understand that you can be pro-war, and not necessarily be for the President. I would be interested in knowing where all these protesters were the FIVE TIMES former President Clinton launched ‘pre-emptive’ attacks on sovereign nations without even consulting Congress or the U.N. If they really are against action without international approval (which is not only a stupid rule to live by but also a dangerous one. And we have already gotten the approval of the international community. Now they are just backing out of their word) then why weren’t they protesting then? I wish that they would just admit that they were anti-Bush, and stop trying to slap charges on him like his is violating a law. Operation Iraqi Freedom is not a violation of any law, and I will always challenge anyone who says it is.
