A Thousand and One
Somewhere
in time's tangled flight, we are frozen:
Shaking hands as I connected with his eyes and
Exuberance performed its debut.
Somewhere
amidst galaxies, a spark is still
Igniting a thousand and one May afternoons.
A thousand and one sunrises delivered only
An awareness of him; where he ate and slept.
Life was merely a momentary distraction.
A thousand and one evenings I cried in shame:
He was forbidden, never knowing of my love.
Nevertheless, his soul sang natural harmony to mine.
A thousand and one dirt roads consumed the energy of unspent dreams;
My journeys made him indistinguishable from the sky.
A thousand and one did not become
A thousand and two . . .
Our eyes never locked again.

Sometimes,
the heavens display a thousand and one stars.
