Today I Remember

Today I remember
The eleventh of September
And everything I saw.
The planes were crashing,
The buildings collapsing
On our school's small TV screen.
Our teachers were scared
and nobody dared
To think just what this would mean.

Today I remember
The eleventh of September
And all those people who died.

The people in the towers
Who didn't know what to do,
The people in the airplanes
Who all lost their lives too,
The brave police and firemen
Who did everything they could,
All of those lives ended that day
In the place the twin towers had stood.

Today I remember
The eleventh of September
And the heroes of the day.

The selfless men and women
Who didn't hesitate
Who stepped up and put a stop to it
Without questioning their own fate.
The ones who searched with hopeful hearts
Through rubble and remains
To find the bodies of loved ones
And ease others' dying pains.

Today I remember
The eleventh of September
And everything I felt.

While I knew the situation wasn't good,
I don't think that I understood
How many people were gone,
What an impact it would make
How our country would shake
Without the Towers or the Pentagon.

My biggest fear
Was it happening here,
I thought the world might end.
Now I see what's come from it,
All the families that have been split-
Such loss I'm not sure I can comprehend.

Today I remember
The eleventh of September
And think about that day.

September 11, 2001
Was a day the whole world shook.
What began like any other day
Ended like a legend from a book.
The kind that happened long before,
With war and bombs and death and gore.
I always presumed we were the Land of the Free,
I never considered it could happen to me.
