A Crystal Tear

Golden sun glittered in almond shaped eyes, coloured a kaleidoscope of shades of green. They swept the busy market square in awe, drinking in every detail of the colourful stalls. Sky’s lips curled into a delighted smile and she took a tentative step forward, as if scared she would find this all a dream if she entered the life that was the Saturday Market. Too overjoyed to dwell on those thoughts for long, the girl raced into the crowds, her gold-streaked copper hair flying behind her like a ray of sunshine. Her friends glanced at each other and grinned knowingly, not at all startled by her childlike glee. Sky was renowned for her innocence and joy of life, and no one ever wished to hurt her. Many said that to look into her eyes was to find the answer to all questions, and one look and you would have lost your heart to her forever. She made friends for life and in return her friends protected her from the cruel outside world.

“She seems to have made another friend.” Gayle said, watching Sky as she picked a little girl up and swung her around, much to the amusement of the little girl’s mother. Jack sighed and smiled slightly.

“What I wouldn’t do to be that little girl,” he murmured wistfully. Gayle raised a perfect eyebrow, her keen hearing catching the wish. She shook her head.

“You’re hopeless.” She groaned. “Don’t tell me that I’ve lost you to her as well!” Jack glared at his friend and absent-mindedly brushed the black hair away from his eyes, a gesture Gayle had come to realise was a sign of nervousness. A small smile came to her lips.

“She’s taken your heart, hasn’t she?” she whispered, and though it wasn’t a question Jack answered anyway.

“Its not like I put up much of a fight.”

Sky set the little girl to the ground and waved before turning around and running back towards her two best friends. Gayle’s dark blue eyes sparkled mischievously and she slowly backed away. Jack watched her out of the corner of his eye, frowning slightly. She was up to something again.

“Sky, you don’t mind if I go back to the car do you?” Gayle asked, flicking her raven hair over her shoulder. Sky smiled and shook her head, wavy copper hair rippling with the movement. Jack’s eyes widened and he sent Gayle a dirty look. The girl merely winked and walked away, shouting over her shoulder,

“Have fun you guys!”

And then she was gone, disappearing into the crowds and leaving Jack glowering. Sky took his hand, not noticing the blush that spread across his cheeks, and giggled, dragging him behind her as she ran back towards the stalls.

“Don’t move, don’t scream, and no one gets hurt.”

Jack squeezed Sky’s hand as she whimpered. They were at the bank having spent the best of two hours at the market. Gayle hadn’t returned, but Jack didn’t mind. Neither did Sky seem to realise that one of her best friends had disappeared and not come back. Jack wasn’t worried about Gayle; he was more worried about himself and Sky at that present moment. Two men dressed in black and balaclavas had entered the bank. There weren’t many in the bank, five at the most including Jack and Sky, and the men had guns.

“I said don’t move!” one man repeated, pointing his gun awkwardly at an old man who had started to move away. Sky shut her eyes tightly and took a deep breath, trying to calm her wild heart. The men were young by the sound of their voices. She could tell by their ineptness that they hadn’t robbed a bank before, or handled a gun. Jack stepped forward, holding out his hand in a sign of peace.

“Now guys, please – “ he began, his voice composed. Sky watched him, felt his hand slip out of hers and felt a pang in her heart at the loss. The second man swung around nervously, his frenzied eyes focused on Jack. He hesitantly raised the gun, his hand visibly shaking.

“Don’t come any closer!” he warned. “I’ll shoot!”

Jack continued to step forward. The man’s arm began to tremble, the gun still directed at his chest. Sky squeezed her eyes tightly shut. The first man span around and cried,

“Larry, what are you doing?”

All Sky heard was the echo of a gunshot and the dull thud of a body as it hit the floor. Ever so slowly, she opened her eyes.

Her heart stopped beating.

“J…Jack?”

But the boy didn’t reply, only twitched as he lay on the floor. The men stared in shock before fleeing for their lives, some of the witnesses chasing after them. Sky collapsed to the floor by Jack’s side, her tears mingling with Jack’s own as they trickled from her traumatized eyes.

“No…” she murmured, her voice cracking with emotion. “Jack! Don’t die!”

He only smiled and replied,

“I love you, Sky.”

Sky held his hand, rocking backwards and forwards as her body shuddered with tears.

“I love you, too.” She sobbed, her answer being too late for Jack to hear. She softly brushed away some of his tears, trying to etch his face into her memory. “I love you, too.” She repeated. All was suddenly quiet as if suspended in time, until Sky’s heart-rending cry pierced the deafening silence.

He was gone.

Sky darted out of the doors, tears streaming down her cheeks. She dashed them away with a flick of her head and ran from the church. She’d never wanted to go to Jack’s funeral, she’d never wanted to say goodbye. It felt like someone had ripped out her heart. She was cold and empty. Just a void. Without a second thought she was suddenly in the middle of the busy road.

‘I’m coming, Jack.’ She thought, oblivious to the approaching danger. The jack-knifing lorry skidded closer. Somewhere far away, and yet so close, Sky heard Gayle scream her name. But she was beyond reach. She could end the pain. Forever.

The last thing she saw was darkness.

The girl stayed by the grave as others moved away. She quietly laid a red rose by the gravestone and closed her eyes.

‘Now I’ve lost two people I love.’ She thought, the desolation engulfing her. She traced the name on the gravestone lovingly.

‘Gayle Everstone’

‘Greater love hath no man than to lay down his life for a friend.’

Sky slowly stood up and turned. From her grief-stricken eyes, a single crystal tear escaped and shattered on the grass.

Yes, yes I know. Depressing. Hate it? Then review me. Love it? Then review me.

Luv ya all!!
