Curiosity of a Child

By: Cindy Moon

She followed the glistening wings of the flutterby.

Ran with it across the brook.

She wanted to go with the butterfly.

She had to take a look.

Where would it lead?

Where would it go?

She had to see.

This naive little girl wanted to know.

Curiosity salted the snail.

It killed the cat.

It beached the whale.

She crossed the brook to the darker side.

Following the wings of the flutterby.

Ignorance left behind while bliss drowned in water deep.

The hopes and joys then crushed, and the girl did weep.

She saw the hunter chase it down.

He ripped out its delicate wings.

No more wonder now, no more hymns to sing.

Now tainted with this vision of hate.

This little girl and her cruel twist of fate.

She wanted to follow, she wanted to see.

But now…

The butterfly will never be free.

She asked herself why

She had to watch such a beautiful thing

Wilt and die.
