I wrote this for a fic, as one of the characters for his Language arts class free poetry thing. This was not the original poem I planned on but the other disappeared when I went to type the story so I came up with this on the spot to take the place of the other one.
**Background if you really want to know. The fic is a Yu-GI-Oh one that is shonen-ai. And the two characters thought they hated each other, until they had to work together on a Science fair project. They then found they had developed feelings for each other but had suppressed them. When they finally figured it out it was overshadowed by the fact that one of them (the one who supposedly wrote this poem) was being abused at home and his love decides to help him. So they still love each other right now, but their love is still a secret because the abusive father is also a homophobic and would kill his son if he ever found out.
~*~*~*~Although this was written for a same gender relationship this poem could easy work for any relationship that society, friends, family, or anyone doesn’t approve of. Whether that is same gender, multi racial, a Romeo and Juliet style, or even a West Side Story love, this poem works for any of those.~*~*~*~
I thought I hated you, I really did.
But most of all I hated myself,
I thought I deserved it,
I hide that fault from the world’s eyes.
But out of everyone, only you saw.
You saved me, that day.
Do you have any idea how close to the edge I was?
I never wanted to fall in love,
I think that’s what you thought too,
But neither of us could stop it.
It’s forbidden you know,
Somewhere it’s written it’s wrong,
I don’t understand that though,
How can something that feels so right,
Be so wrong, and frowned upon?
We always thought we were opposites,
But isn’t that how the saying goes,
‘Opposites attract’?
You put my pieces back together,
You made me whole again,
And you added an extra,
You gave me a soul and a purpose.
I learned that you too lied to the world,
Suddenly I could see you,
The real one, not the façade.
I can see that your past still haunts you,
It’s there in your eyes.
I know that you try to be strong for me.
But what about you
Can I be there for you too?
I want to be there for you, too.
You would have told the world about us,
But you stop because of me,
And I appreciate it more than you’ll ever know,
I know you can tell how scared I am,
But I think in time I’ll get over it,
I know I will if you wait for me.
I know it pains you to see me like this,
I never wanted to hurt you.
You have become my support, and comfort.
My world is now you,
I don’t think I would have anything to live for without you.
You’re my Shangri-la (*),
And I never want to leave.
But I have never told you the truth.
Maybe someday I can be brave enough to tell you,
To say what I feel for you,
I think you know but the words mean so much,
I know you feel it too,
Those words can leave you open and vulnerable,
But when said right, they can bond forever.
And if you wait a little,
I know can tell you this,
I love you so much it hurts,
And I never want to leave your side,
Ever.
