Behind the Smile

IceAngelDarkMoon

This poem was just calling out to me to be written. I have no idea where the inspiration came from but I kind of like it!

There are so many people in the world that have been hurt

So many wounds left bleeding for the world,

So many that time cannot heal or protect from infection.

We see those that frown and cry,

We find out their hurt, and do our best to help.

But what of those who smile, have you ever looked close,

Searched their eyes for a hint of pain,

You tell yourself that a smile means everything is fine,

A smile is all there is, nothing more.

You can ignore it as long as you like,

But the truth never disappears.

There is so much one can hide behind a smile.

The greatest pains of the world,

The rawest wounds that are filled with puss,

And those that overflow and never get better.

If there is a smile nothing could be wrong, right?

Think again, the people closest to the edge smile,

Everyone wonders why they never suspected someone was so close,

They knew, the signs were there,

But they couldn’t get themselves to look beyond the smile.

Look at the eyes instead,

You’ll see the pain, it’s clear.

But you can act blind very well.

Didn’t you realize you can smile,

While your tears stream silently down your face?

Or that you can smile a fake smile

While your broken heart bleeds?

There is a whole life you could hide behind a smile,

But because you smile and joke,

There could never be anything wrong!

The mouth is not the key to emotions, it’s the eyes.

A depressing poem, I know but it really makes you think and look back on your own life and all your own smiles! Please review and let me know what you think!! IADM
