How To Get Your Man
Prologue
"I am a goddess." Julia Vasquez looked at herself in front of the mirror. "I am a goddess," she repeated over and over again.
She wasn't being being overly self-confident or anything like that; she was simply telling the truth.
She was a goddess. Like Gloria in Buffy the vampire slayer series; only she was a good goddess, and she was a true goddess. Anyway, goddesses don't cower when they come face-to-face with the nicest guy in town. But she does. What kind of a goddess does that make her?
Well, okay, so her actions were a bit justifiable. After all, he did have the cutest, shyest smile ever.
"But I'm a goddess!" she nearly shouted. She had power. She could make it rain, she could hear other people's thoughts, she could see into the future (or the past for that matter), she could do basically everything. Well, apparently not everything, such as talking to a guy.
The phone rang and Julia jumped in surprise.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Julia, it's me Monica."
"Oh. Hi."
"Okay, what have you been doing?"
"What do you mean?" Julia asked in an innocent voice.
"I know that tone. Something's up. Did you embarrass yourself?"
Julia groaned.
"Got it in one guess, didn't I?"
"Okay, I just did the stupidest thing ever."
"Don't say that. It could have been the second stupidest thing you've ever done," Monica teased. "Okay, so what did you do?"
"Okay." Julia took a deep breath. "I was just coming out of National Bookstore when I saw him."
"Him?" Monica asked.
"Him. You know. Him."
"Oh, yeah. Continue."
"I hurried to my car and shoved in my the books that I bought. Then I saw him coming towards me and I panicked. So I went in my car, pretended I didn't see him and I rushed off. And almost hit a no unloading/loading sign, by the way."
"Gee. I don't know what to say. Except, are you crazy?" Monica half-shouted.
"Yeah, I know it was awful," Julia muttered.
"Julia, it was your chance to talk to him!"
"Well I didn't know what else to do," Julia wailed.
"How about talking to him for a change instead of running as fast as you can in the opposite direction."
"Weeeeeell, I didn't exactly run, I drove my car," Julia said logically.
"Julia, you know what I mean."
"God, I hate it when you say my name like that. You make my name sound so... persnickety."
"What? Persnickety? That doesn't even make sense! And to use such a word is so...so..."
"Persnickety?"
"Yes! Wait! How did we get from the situation to an argument about persnickety? Is there even such a word? God, I hate it when you try to change the subject."
"It was worth a try," Julia said, grinning.
"Could you just wait? I'll go there okay?"
"Okay." Julia placed her phone down.
After a minute, Monica appeared in front of her.
"What took you so long?" Julia complained.
"Sorry, I had to pull down the blinds at my house, I wouldn't want my neighbors to see me disappear like a ghost."
"Good thinking. Once, I forgot to pull down the blinds and when I changed clothes with magic, my nosy neighbor Rita saw me and fainted."
"Good thing you saw her," Monica said wryly.
"Yup, I immediately erased it from her memory and told her that she fainted from the heat."
"Knowing you, you've had worse."
"Yeah, I think about 30% of the people I know has seen me doing something, er, magical, all of whom whose memories I erased. Once, I made a mistake saying the erasing spell and accidentally erased all of this guy's memories. Took me about an hour to undo what I did." Julia snickered.
"Going back to the matter at hand," Monica said, looking at her sternly.
"Yeah, yeah. Will you please stop acting so motherly? I mean, for crying out loud, you're even starting to look like mom."
“That’s okay, your mom’s pretty.”
Julia sighed. “I’m sorry for bothering you Monica. It’s just that I can never find the courage to speak to guys. I guess I’m just not that kind of girl who can go up to a guy and ask him for coffee or something like that.”
“You don’t lack courage,” Monica said encouragingly, then frowned. “Wait, you do lack courage. Why don’t you put a spell on yourself?”
“We’ve already done that before. Remember Jason?”
Monica shivered. “Oh yeah. I particularly remember how you literally jumped at him. That has got to be one of the funniest and weirdest things I have ever seen.”
“I don’t think it’s something my powers can change. It’s just the way I am. It’s up to me to fix it. I’ll find a way.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of,” Monica mumbled.****************
