fall of babylon

some thoughts on the recent museum lootings in iraq, mixed with my ancient near eastern religion class. history is vital to knowing who we are and where we come from, if we don't know that, we can't move on... the past is always worth protecting...

fall of babylon

cradle of civilization…

civilized?

what right have any of us

to call ouselves civilized?

destruction is refined

and made an art;

yet is still destruction.

not so long ago

a few mudbrick tablets

with wedge shaped marks

older than some

peoples,

languages,

religions,

races,

countries,

were smashed.

really,

what are a few bricks

when we smash peoples?

only their own history.

destroyed

for lack of resale value.

their own past.

and ours.

our mutual cradle,

our shared birthright.

reduced to piles of cuneiform dust.
