Chapter Four-Blue Diamonds

The twenty-first of December, in the year 117 O.T.

            Dear Aslynne,

This week has been most mysterious, although I must say, I do not mind the mystery.  It’s most intriguing, and due to my awful appearance at court, I will never have to opportunity to take part in court intrigues, rather known as politics, therefore this past week has been most interesting, and quite enjoyable.

First, the present of gloves that I received on the fourteenth caused quite a stir in this household.  I had no clue who sent them to me, and that confused Father to no end.  He spent much of that day in the tavern, although, it wasn’t that he was unhappy. Rather, a twinkle returned to his eyes that had been absent since I was presented to court.  Then, to make matters worst- no, worst isn’t the right word- more interesting, on the fifteenth, I received a bouquet of roses! Roses! In the wintertime, nonetheless!  The sheer cost of roses in the middle of winter would be more than I’d ever hope to posses in my lifetime.  Then, on the sixteenth I received a bottle of Valen perfume, then a quaint little book of poems, and ribbons and then chocolates, each time packaged in a simple wooden box with no note attached, no clue of the sender.

And then today! My blood runs cold and my spine shivers as I think of the events that have happened today.  I still can comprehend it!  I am so excited, and nervous and want to scream, but then Da Gran would yell at me.  It is not lady-like to scream, and I am a noble, supposedly.  I laugh as I write to you, Aslynne.  You will never believe what has happened, but I will explain it anyway.

This morning, very early, like every other day this week, Arva came into my chambers, exclaiming for me to wake up and open the box that was on the doorstep for me.  Today was no exception and I quickly came to see it.  The box was even smaller than all the others, and reveled another box inside it.  Placed imperially on dark blue velvet, was a matching bracelet and necklace set of silver, with beautifully placed blue diamonds, sparkling back at me in the light.  Silver and blue diamonds!

I fainted, Aslynne, I truly did.  A silver and blue diamond bracelet and necklace set, for me!  When I was woken, Arva told me that this time, a note was attached to the package, and I quickly read it, before I jumped up for joy (and Da Gran, were she here, would have scolded me splendidly!) Anyway, here is a copy of the note:

            Dear Lady Cosette of Barrie,

Although Queen Evelien may not think you are a proper lady, I think you are, well, you certainly are an interesting person, and I am in admiration of your behavior toward the Royal Family during your brief visitation to the court of Harren.  You can be really pretty, too, Lady Cosette.  You are really great.  I hope to see you soon.

And that was it, Aslynne! There was no signature of anything!  None whatsoever! I still can’t believe it! I have been receiving all these wonderful gifts from some boy who thinks I am interesting, and pretty and great.  Can you believe it?  And there are so few clues, I could never figure out who sent this to me, all I know is that he is wealthy, knows of my escapade at court earlier this year, and is not fond of the royal family.  That could be nearly anyone! Well, I hope I will hear from my “Blue Diamond Friend” soon, at least I will hear from him in my dreams.

            Sincerely,

            Cosette
