The world is cold and a hateful place,
And you came from where it was hot,
They overlook you purposely,
And tell you what you are not.
They picked you out of the rubble,
The coal from whence you came,
They held you to light and looked at you hard,
They held your flaws to blame.
They throw you back out on the dusty ground,
Your jagged ends pierce the dirt,
Then I picked you up and cleaned you off,
And saw beauty beyond the hurt.
With a looking glass of powerful lens,
Determination in my heart,
With a knife as sharp as the eye of God,
I cut your shield apart.
Lumps give way to flat surface,
So heavy, and yet, so light,
You reflect within, and rays burst forth,
Colors refracted in sight.
A gorgeous thing you have become,
What have you been before?
Now the people marvel at you,
For your beauty they implore.
Original state cut down to size,
Smaller but more complex,
Did they love you before you changed?
Do they know what will come next?
From me, you went to your buyer,
From your buyer you went to the shop,
So far away you are from your shaper,
Your journey will never stop.
I didn't make you who you are,
I just broke away the shell,
Now your beauty spills before the world,
To them, you had so much to tell.
Don’t look back, you’re harder than rock,
Go forth, my shimmering star,
A delicate form, lines so thin,
They cannot change who you are.
Through the elements, you stayed clean,
Even when times were tough,
You have shown the world what you can do,
You’re my diamond in the rough.
