Chapter 3
Chaos of the Moon
The trip to the moon was quick and not as I expected. I couldn’t wait to see the kingdom my mother and I dreamed about. My father’s kingdom that I would now rule. I hoped that I was ready.
“Your father is still being mourned,” Chet told me as we approached the moon. It was dark. The darkness that takes over when in mourning.
The cloud landed softly on a dark surface. The surface was different though. Grains of silver could be seen in the dirt and at the right moment, I could see why the moon could be seen as silver.
Armed guards approached us. They were frightful creatures. Their skin was like tough leather, and their faces ruined with frowns and dirt. Their armor was red of an unnatural shade. As if countless people’s blood had stained them that way. They bowed before us. Or Chet rather, I was sure. One stood up. He appeared kinder, if that was possible.
“Welcome back, my Lord,” he said.
“Thank you,” Chet replied, “May I present her majesty, Queen Lily of the Moon Kingdom.”
“Hail the Queen! May the moon shine forever in her name!” the guards shouted in unison. I was a bit overwhelmed.
“These are your guards,” Chet explained, “They are the best of your army. If I may ask, your highness, your father had left me in charge of the army. Would it be alright if I kept my post?”
“Of course, I don’t see why not,” I answered.
“My queen, we must move immediately. An angered mob is heading this way,” the guard that spoke earlier told me. I found later he was the top general.
“Why are they angered?” I asked as we moved speedily over hills of dark silver dirt.
“You have to understand, this kingdom has just lost their one and only ruler. The people don’t know what to do. They’ve gone crazy. But once we reinstate you as queen, things will get better,” Chet told me.
“Reinstate?” I asked. I thought I was already queen.
“Yes, it won’t be an easy process. We’ll go to the elders first. When the accept you, there will be a ceremony. The whole kingdom will be invited. The worst of the resistance will be attacked their. Then you’ll be crowned queen. Others will accept in fear of those who resisted.”
“Are you sure that would be the right thing to do?” I asked.
“Don’t worry about it, everything will be fine,” Chet told me. He had stopped to look me in the eyes to reassure me. And for that moment, I believed him.
“After that, you’ll just have to rule the kingdom. I’ll lead the army to stop any revolutions that will come up. You’ll have to convince the elders that you really are their queen though, or they’ll declare you to be a fake and who knows what will happen then.”
“The elders are important then?”
“Yes, they’ve been here since the beginning of time. Well not their bodies, but their minds, memories, and knowledge. They pass them on to their descendants that they choose before death everyone 100 years,” Chet explained.
“Chet I don’t know if I can do this,” I stopped.
Chet sent the army on, reassuring them that he would make sure I was delivered to the castle safely. Only the general stayed, and he went off a bit, to give us privacy.
“You must not fear this,” Chet told me as he took my hands.
My eyes started to tear up. I was afraid of what I had done. Thrown into a kingdom that I knew nothing about, except the duty and honor I felt for it.
“Your father would have wanted this,” Chet told me again.
I nodded in response and he pressed me against him so I could cry on his shoulder. My crystal tears making his dark clothes darker.
“There!” we heard someone shout in the distance.
“We must go,” Chet said, a bit worried. The ground was starting to rumble.
“The moon is angry,” he explained as we began to run.
There was an earthquake. Where we were standing was now a hole that was beginning to close up. On the other side were hundreds of people. They looked angry. They held spears of silver and shouted in anger.
“The resistance,” Chet pointed out, “The moon saved us.”
Unlike the relief Chet felt, I felt only fear. We could have been swallowed up by the moon and forever lost.
I never saw a castle like the one of my father’s. In the silver dirt of the moon, there were chrome lilies, unlike anything I saw before. Chet explained to me they were a tribute to my beautiful mother.
“He loved her more than his kingdom,” Chet told me, “It led to his downfall.”
“Will you fight against the dark of the moon?” I asked him.
He didn’t answer. We had approached to the gates of the golden castle.
“The elders await you inside,” the head general told us.
I was about to meet my fate.
