Follow Your Heart

Part 1 - Cannibal

Prologue

When one is wandering on the brink of madness,

How does one know one has crossed the line?

Two people, both of them think the other is crazy,

Who is really the crazy one?

The insane light of the dragon’s eyes shone a deep crimson, the same colour as the blooded sky. His lips curled into a smile that stretched too far, sharp claws digging into the crumbling walls, his laughter ringing around the dead town. Cold, howling winds blew fiercely, telling stories of death. The dragon laughed even harder.

Another creature from the shadows shook his head silently. Poor fool. But I’m here to end it all.

The creature made an open approach towards the still laughing dragon, who stopped abruptly as soon as he spotted the creature. Fear filled those eyes, ones that once were as fearless as a young lion. Yellowing teeth and a jaw which was now deformed could barely splutter out a question in his native tongue, something the dragon had not spoken in many years. ‘Haaaku dyraaasssh nerrrreth essscrrraaa?

The creature from the shadows smirked. ‘How did I know you were here, Draak?’ he sneered, a forked tongue sliding in and out of his maw, ‘Do not ever estimate the information we have, dear dragon.’

Eyes rolling in their dark sockets, Draak’s long neck whirled around, as if looking for something. The other watched the once proud dragon search vainly in mild amusement. Shutting his eyes, the creature rested for a short while, knowing Draak wouldn’t attack him.

A short, quiet gasp woke the creature up. Draak was staring at one of the deserted side alleys of this ghost town. There stood a ragged girl with short, ragged, red hair. She tilted her head, looking at the pair of mismatched creatures, her skin pale, almost ethereal, not a single cut or scratch marring it.

‘Aaakaaaiii, huuuaaat aaarrraaash gorrr errru?’ hissed Draak, his eyes dilating.

The girl looked at the dragon in mild confusion. She slowly walked towards him, stumbling slightly as the rough pebbles cut into her bare feet. The other creature watched silently, an evil grin in his eyes. Wrapping a pale hand around the reddish skin on Draak’s arm, the girl leant against him. He stroked her messy though soft hair gently, with an affection not shown in many dragons.

‘You make me sick! What sort of dragon are you, hanging around with a human?’ hissed the shadowy creature, eyes narrowing, ‘At least I’ve come to end your miserable life!’ he spat, lunging at the dragon aiming for the heart.

Blood sprayed everywhere, the grim satisfaction of the mysterious creature, a roar of a mortally wounded dragon, the thump of his lifeless body hitting the ground and a scream of a young one.

‘Father!’
