Just simply because.

You were going to tell him how you felt. You were going to try to put into words the emotions he evoked in you every time he did something as simple as saying your name. You were going to. But you didn't. No, how could you when he introduced you to the 'girl of his dreams.' Apparently he met her last month at a concert. He didn't tell you about her because he wanted didn't want to get his hopes up. Well, he certainly managed to get someone's hopes up. All this time, you thought he was flirting with you. If not flirting then you thought he was giving you some sort of sign. But it appears he wasn't. It had all been in your head.

He asks you for your opinion on her. You mumble something about her seeming nice and make a haste exit. The next few days are spent avoiding them. In other words you stayed in your room. Crying most of the time. Your brother came home last week. He's been nothing but sympathetic towards you. You don't know why though, you never told him. You never told anyone. Then, one day your friend comes to see you. He wants to know where you've been. He's missed you. You try to act as if you've been ill but it doesn't fool him. He goes on to accuse you of purposely avoiding him. You've never lied to him before, so you decide not to start now. You tell him you have been avoiding him. That it would be better for you if he just fucked off out of your life. He looks hurt. All he can do is stand motionless, his eyes misting over. He asks you why. So you show him why. You grab him. Pull him close and just before you kiss him, you whisper the word sorry against his lips. The kiss ends. He just stares. You can't stand the tension. So you leave. You just get up and leave. Leaving him to stand in your room alone.

You didn't have any particular destination in mind when you left the house. But if you had thought about it, it would have been obvious where you were going to end up. You always came here. Usually it was with him. You found a clearing in the woods when you two were younger. It was right next to a stream so you spent most of the summers as a child playing here. Then as you got older it became a place to think. So it was no wonder that you ended up here. You had, after all just destroyed your friendship. So you sat by that stream for what seemed like hours. Just staring at it. Not really thinking. No, that could be kept for later. For now all you wanted to do was sit and wallow in pity.

It was due to your wallowing that you didn't hear him approach you, nor did you notice him when he sat behind you, putting his hand on your shoulder. It was only when he whispered your name into your ear that you noticed him. Then you tried to stand up, but found his arms were holding you in place. You didn't know what to do. So you just apologised. Over and over again. He asked you why you kissed him. Letting go of you so you could face him. You decided that you should be truthful. So you told him what you had intended to tell him all those weeks ago. You told him were in love with him. That you wanted to be so much more than friend. You then lowered your head in shame. Told him you would understand if he never wanted to talk to you again. But that there was nothing he could do to change your mind. He told you to look at him. You didn't. He asked you again to look at him, that you owed him that much. The guilt made you look up. You avoided his eyes. You couldn't bear to see what emotions were playing in them. But then he ruined it. He grabbed you underneath your chin and made you look at him. You wanted to die at this moment. But then he did something only he could possibly do. He took your breath away. He kissed you. When you parted you asked him why he kissed you. He simply replied; I'm in love with you.
