Through out the many ages of the world, there have always been stories of humans, demons, and many other creatures who showed signs of inhuman powers. All of these abilities were known as ‘magic’ and many of these beings were classified as ‘supernaturals’, while all of the ordinary humans became known as ‘mortals’. Generally, the supernaturals and the mortals stayed out of each other’s way, but there were certain exceptions. Occasionally, a mortal and a supernatural would fall in love and have a child, which would be known as a hanyou. Other times, supernatural creatures granted power to mortals of great skill and virtue, creating cultures such as the Dragon Clan. These cultures, along with the hanyous and any humans born with supernatural qualities, walked the dividing line between the supernaturals and the mortals, and any hatred that one had for the other was directed towards them as well.

Over time, the supernaturals and the mortals drifted apart even more. As the supernatural creatures slowly faded into the shadows, mortals stopped believing in magic and started to indulge themselves in the quest to find a scientific reason for everything that occurred. The supernaturals continued to exist in a world unknown to the mortals. This happened all over the world except in one place: Japan. There, mortals and supernaturals actually developed into one society, everyone befriending each other and working together. Schools of magic were known by everyone, and those that became accepted were considered very honorable.

Although the supernaturals and the mortals got along well enough within Japan, this concept of co-existance wouldn’t be accepted well by the rest of the world. Knowing this, the Japanese people decided to hide this ‘magical existance’ from the rest of the world. It became Japan’s most well guarded secret. Though they might have had magic in some of their creations that were shared with the rest of the world, no one breathed a word of the truth behind all of the legends to any outsiders. This culture, a mix of mortals and supernaturals, has survived to the present day. Young, promising magicians still attend schools to master their skills. Of all of these schools, the most famous one is known as Akui High.
