Walking through the snow and leaving footprints on the ground,
Soft white crunch and two-toned tweet provide the only sound.
Horizon blinks and over her peep little orphaned trees.
How still they stand as they await my lonesome company.
Wet diamond whiteness glitters in its shallow shadow mounds.
Cold cleansing air and fresh-scrubbed sky hiss weightless all around.
I see the glimmer of the sun pierce frozen atmosphere,
Provides the light we see by but does not heat up the air.
Miles of footprints do I leave but never reach a town.
The landscape here is empty but for still snow on the ground.
Once at noon a hedgehog poked his head up from his hole.
No animals alight here in so dazzling a show.
Nature shows her beauty but with scant tree and wide snow.
But how to love the Earth when all her fauna hides below?
